About The Position

The D.C. Bar Marketing & Communications Department is looking for a curious, collaborative, and detail-oriented journalism intern to join our editorial team in the summer of 2026. The editorial internship position is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to the Bar’s various communication platforms, including its award-winning flagship publication, Washington Lawyer; blog; e-newsletters; and social media, while gaining exposure to legal journalism, editorial strategy, and the full production cycle. The successful candidate will gain mentorship from experienced editors and legal journalists, exposure to issues shaping the legal profession and broader society, insight into the editorial production process, and experience working in a mission-driven environment that values curiosity, initiative, and passion for clear, concise, and compelling storytelling. The internship is expected to begin June 2026 and will run through August 2026. This is an hourly position working up to 21 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Current student pursuing a degree in communications, journalism, digital media, or a related field.
  • Strong writing, research, and storytelling skills.
  • Interest in law, legal systems, or public policy.
  • Demonstrated confidence conducting interviews and synthesizing complex topics.
  • Reliable, organized, and receptive to feedback.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact, including in-person, with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Bar employees.
  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style and digital publishing tools.
  • Experience working with a school publication or student media.

Responsibilities

  • Pitches, researches, and writes articles, interviews, and briefs for print and digital platforms.
  • Shadows D.C. Bar content producers and observes how complex legal topics are translated for diverse audiences.
  • Attends and reports on D.C. Bar events, CLEs, and Communities programs.
  • Assists with fact-checking, copyediting, and proofreading.
  • Supports e-newsletter and social media content development.
  • Participates in editorial meetings and learns about production workflows, deadlines, and design collaboration.
  • Contributes to strategic conversations about audience engagement and editorial voice.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
