About The Position

Skilled tradesmen who performs the work of developing and laying out, fitting, bolting up, assembling and erecting plate, shapes, and pipe when used to form a part of a structural assembly in connection with ship construction, alteration, and repair specified by blueprints, work orders, or instructions from supervisor or management. The shipfitter is responsible for building and/or repairing the complete hull of a metal ship. The fitter has the primary responsibility for maintaining its watertight integrity. The shipfitter also manufactures and installs interior and exterior weldments such as: Bulwarks, Coamings, Doors, Foundations, Gratings, Hawse Pipes, Ladders, Mast, Bulkheads, King Post, Racks, Railing, Sea Chest, Stanchions, Stowages, Tanks, Trunks, Yardarms, and Hull Zincs. The shipfitter repairs and/or removes damage ship structures and fittings, prepares surfaces for welding, burning, riveting and lays out holes for drilling. This work is accomplished using miscellaneous hand and power tools. The shipfitter may also be required to perform as a roll operator, punch operator, shear operator, track burner, drill and saw operator. The shipfitter may also have to arrange for staging, crane service, ventilation, lighting, and support services (air, electricity, and water). The above description is general in nature. Requirements

  • Shipfitters with 2+ years of experience in ship fitting, REQUIRED
  • 5 Panel Drug Test
  • Non-DOT Physical
  • Physical Agility Test
  • OSHA Respirator Questionnaire
  • Basic Background Check
  • All Workers Are Required To Wear Safety Equipment Including: Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Ear Plugs, and Safety Toed Shoes. Respirators And Fall Protection is to be worn when working in areas that require additional protection.

Responsibilities

  • Determines the position of structural components, working from blueprints or templates.
  • Locate specific components (precut & labeled structural members) and may use a scribe to mark reference lines, such as center, and frame lines.
  • Fitters are responsible for locating parts as specified by blueprints.
  • Fitters are required to fit various metal parts into the vessel or module to precise specifications and measurements.
  • The fitter is required to align these part specifications so that a Tacker can tack the parts into place.
  • The fitter may use various tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wedges, torches, clips, shims, various measurement tools such as level, square, and measuring tape.
  • Fitters are expected to visually inspect all tools
  • Employees are often required to perform other jobs beyond the essential functions of their primary job.
  • Employees are responsible for checking lanyards and harnesses before use when working in hazardous high locations.
  • Employees must protect themselves from UV radiation and ensure sufficient ventilation is available in closed spaces to remove any toxins that result from burning and welding.
