About The Position

Marine Mechanical Systems Engineer As a member of the Engineering Department team at Dougherty Manufacturing, you will be responsible for the engineering and integration of fiberglass, gel, mechanical, electrical, laminate, and structural system designs for Dougherty Manufacturing for Solace Boats and other company projects.  This will require the use of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools to generate 3D surface models for liners, decks, and small parts and strong competency with complex mechanism development. Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Consideration will be given for candidates with significant work experience (greater than five years) in lieu of education requirements.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in marine or auto product design preferred with knowledge of production processes.
  • Computer Aided Design experience (Rhino, AutoCAD, Solid Works are preferred).
  • Must work well with other employee’s and departments throughout Dougherty Manufacturing, as well as outside vendors.
  • Must be able to support new product development that may require hours outside of the normal schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Generate 3D surface models of decks, liners, and small parts to be utilized for 5-axis milling and tooling design
  • Lead and execute mechanical system design across fluid systems, structural components, and complex mechanisms, ensuring manufacturability and supplier readiness through 3D/2D modeling and validation.
  • Review and approve specifications, drawings, and Engineering Change Notices (ECN’s), ensuring alignment with cost, performance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with suppliers, manufacturing, and Warranty Department to support product launches, resolve issues, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Validate designs using warranty data, system testing, and compliance checks with industry regulations and sustainability goals.
  • Support sourcing and quality assurance by verifying materials and providing accurate specifications.
  • Complete engineering of assigned areas of a boat including fiberglass design, purchased parts and hardware development, mechanical system/hose routing, electrical layout, etc.
  • Work with suppliers on the development of new systems and components to ensure continuous improvement in the quality and value of our boats systems.
  • Ensure that new designs and components meet the cost, quality, performance, and functional requirements of the new and enhancement boat designs.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings and assembly prints for new boat designs as well as upgrades and re-engineering on existing designs.
  • Participate in manufacturing integration activities to ensure successful launches of new boats and technologies as well as continuous improvement activities.
  • Support manufacturing and Warranty on issue resolution.
  • Ensure that designs have been fully validated and that they meet necessary system specifications and performance requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all necessary ABYC and USCG regulations.
  • Ensure that all materials used in the manufacture of finished products have been tested and approved for quality and reliability.
  • Perform final system design verification tests as needed.
  • May be required to travel when necessary.
