About The Position

THIS IS A REPOST - APPLICANTS THAT PREVIOUSLY APPLIED MUST RE-APPLY TO BE CONSIDERED This is supervisory work in the maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of gasoline and diesel engines, and other marine equipment in the Department of Transportation, Ferry Division and Marine Maintenance unit. Employee may supervise and coordinate the work of Marine Mechanics, Electricians and sub-contractors. Work is performed with considerable independence, in accordance with trade practices, departmental policies and US Coast Guard instructions and federal regulations. Work is subject to USCG oversite, inspection and reviewed by proper operation of repaired equipment. The employee must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle. Duties include but are not limited to: Determine the type and extent of repair work necessary to return the equipment to proper operation as soon as possible. Schedule and assign work to employees and establish general work hour limits necessary to complete repairs. Assist employees with difficult and specialized assignments, and with problems encountered. Determine the extent of additional repairs to be done; and at times, perform a variety of skilled tasks. Inspect work upon completion and determine that equipment is in proper operating condition Prepare reports, work schedules, materials requisition, manage inventory levels and budget for each project as needed. Working knowledge of Microsoft word, excel, and SAP to create and provide reports for weekly supervisor/work progress meetings. Manage supply ordering, monitoring purchases and tracking to ensure timely delivery. Manage the workforce by monitoring work hours and overtime. Complete daily attendance reports to the assistant director. Ensure weekly time entry is completed properly and timely. Participate in the hiring of new employees for the department, completing paperwork, conducting interviews, etc. Ensure annual training is completed by employees and maintain proper documentation. Perform all other duties as required by supervisor. Prefer candidate to possess Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) This position will work out of the CEDAR ISLAND MAINTENANCE FACILITY and will work 5 days a week.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey tasks associated with maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air, and electric systems, and components, one year of which was in to ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines and other equipment repaired in a marine maintenance facility.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic, air and electric control systems found on ferries, dredges and other marine equipment.
  • Skill in the diagnostics of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Experience in scheduling, coordinating, instructing, training and assigning work
  • Experience inspecting work upon completion and determining whether the equipment is in proper operating condition.
  • Prefer candidate to possess Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
