About The Position

Responsible for testing, maintaining, repairing, and installing marine electrical components primarily on AC / DC electrical systems in commercial vessels. Under general supervision, you will plan wire runs, pull wire, terminate wires at panels, and electrically connect components. This position requires a thorough understanding of electrical/electronic and mechanical theories and principles, as well as installation standards and practices. Routinely install and connect required equipment in accordance with provided work order specifications, references, drawings and standards. Skilled at examining electrical system wiring circuits, equipment, motors and fixtures, performing tests using a multi-meter or other diagnostic equipment to determine the reason(s) for the fault. Ideally, this will include providing recommendations to the department foreman on restoring equipment to normal operation. Expected to provide a high level of customer satisfaction while completing assigned work to meet departmental and other relevant standards.

Requirements

  • Must provide own hand tools
  • Install boat cable on bulkheads with brackets and screws, using hand tools, pulling wires through cable trays to terminal strips in junction boxes, to circuit breakers, to voltage regulators and to distribution switch panels
  • Strip insulation from wire ends and making terminal connections of all types, if any, using stripping pliers and swaging tools, and make the electrical connections to the intended device
  • Test electrical characteristics including voltage, resistance, and phase angle, in circuits, using voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase rotation indicators
  • Troubleshoot electrical equipment and circuits using appropriate test equipment, repairs, or replacement requirements
  • Conduct resistance measurements of electrical cables
  • Must possess the ability to periodically board vessels in and out of the water, work steadily in confined spaces, climb, lift, and move batteries, tools and supplies as necessary
  • Must have an excellent work ethic and attitude
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Minimum 5 years of industry experience in electrical, ideally within the marine environment
  • Possess a thorough understanding of AC or DC circuit operation and theory
  • Skilled at troubleshooting, diagnostics and completing repairs for system malfunctions
  • Ability to utilize all functions of a multi-meter
  • Capable of testing circuits for voltage, continuity and amp draw
  • Understanding and ability to connect isolation transformers and galvanic isolators
  • Understanding of proper wire and circuit overcurrent protection sizing and where to reference these standards
  • Strong ability to be reliable and work well with all levels of personnel whether individually or in a team environment

  • Ability to perform work accurately, thoroughly and be attentive to details
  • Understand ship terminology, local and industry, e.g., port/starboard, bow/stern, etc. and can easily convey information in a common vernacular understood by other industry professionals
  • Ability to complete all calibration and documentation associated with testing and repairs
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Follow prescribed safety rules and OSHA regulations while maintaining a safe, clean work area
