About The Position

The Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that protects and restores natural and built environments through innovation, collaboration, education, and advocacy. PEC has four regional offices across Pennsylvania, where staff engage in projects and policy initiatives that promote land and water-based recreational opportunities, equitable access to the outdoors, protection and conservation of water resources, promotion of forward-thinking energy and climate approaches, and sustainable development of communities and landscapes. Position Summary: The Mapping/Program Coordinator is a full-time, exempt position based in the Pennsylvania Environmental Council’s Pittsburgh or State College office. This role serves as PEC’s primary GIS and mapping resource, supporting programs across the organization through data management, analysis, and the creation of both digital and print maps and tools. The position also helps support broader Trails and Recreation program needs, including public engagement, and works closely with other PEC staff and external partners. The Mapping/Program Coordinator reports to the Mapping and Program Manager.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in geography or GIS, or a degree in environmental studies/science, outdoor recreation, planning, or natural resource management with a strong GIS background is preferred.
  • The successful candidate should have a passion for the environment, conservation, and outdoor recreation.
  • Proficiency with the Esri ArcGIS platform, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and related web and field applications (e.g., Dashboards, Field Maps, StoryMaps)
  • Strong cartographic and map design skills
  • Experience managing and organizing spatial data, including maintaining data quality and consistency
  • Familiarity with spatial analysis and basic geoprocessing workflows
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong research and problem-solving skills, including comfort learning new tools
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Due to travel requirements, candidates must have a valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with scripting or coding for GIS applications preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Manage PEC’s GIS data
  • Maintain organized datasets and mapping projects in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
  • Oversee a statewide trails dataset, ensuring consistent attribution and data integrity
  • Coordinate data acquisition, integration, and updates from internal and external sources
  • Maintain clear documentation of project datasets and workflows
  • Conduct spatial analysis and technical GIS work
  • Create, edit, and manage spatial data, including vector and raster datasets; digitize features from static and georeferenced sources
  • Conduct spatial analyses such as prioritization and trail gap analyses to support PEC program goals
  • Develop repeatable geoprocessing workflows and models to improve efficiency and consistency
  • Stay current with emerging GIS tools, data sources, and technical best practices that are relevant to PEC’s work
  • Create and maintain map products to support PEC’s programs
  • Create engaging StoryMaps and other web apps utilizing a combination of mapping, writing, and multimedia
  • Create and maintain online interactive maps, tools, and dashboards, ensuring user-friendliness and accuracy
  • Produce high-quality static maps for reports, meetings, and other purposes at the request of PEC staff
  • Collaborate with PEC staff and outside partners on mapping needs
  • Communicate with staff and partners to understand needs and find the best solution
  • Use creative problem-solving skills to fulfill mapping requests
  • Collect and share data with partners
  • Provide training on mapping tools to PEC staff and partners
  • Develop written and video tutorials
  • Participate in and/or lead trainings on mapping tools, both to groups and individuals, in-person and virtually
  • Provide non-mapping support to other Trails and Recreation program projects
  • Work on a team to produce reports, including reviewing and distilling plans, doing research and writing, and occasional field work
  • Participate in public engagement and outreach
  • Represent PEC at meetings, conferences, and events and provide support for PEC-hosted events
  • Requires occasional overnight travel and work outside of normal office hours, including weekends
