The Role The Manufacturing Execution Engineer GA for ME Optimization is responsible for leading General Assembly manufacturing optimization projects across multiple assembly sites. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across Manufacturing Engineering, Plant Production, Industrial Engineering, Quality, and Maintenance to design, build, and commission state-of-the-art automation in GM vehicle assembly plants. This role plays a key part in shaping how General Motors operates within General Assembly and advancing our journey toward the factory of the future. You will be accountable for maximizing efficiency and reducing MCPU through effective utilization of personnel, materials, equipment, and facilities. Key deliverables include leading the coordination, planning, budgeting, development, and execution of GA optimization projects from ideation through installation, and creating efficient, lean processes that can be deployed across the GM enterprise. Work is performed in a centralized manufacturing engineering environment as well as in assembly plants, with a high level of independent judgment and interaction with all levels of the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of manufacturing engineering experience.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting manufacturing launches.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and drive timely escalations when required.
  • High level of collaboration and cross-functional skills to work effectively across plants and central teams.
  • Strong data management, analysis, presentation, and problem-solving skills applied to complex, unusual challenges.
  • Creative, action-oriented mindset with a track record of turning ideas into executed solutions.
  • High proficiency with Teamcenter, AutoDesk, and Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Visio, Project, PowerPoint).
  • Proven experience leading complex individual projects, including resource coordination, status reporting, and timeline tracking.
  • Deep technical knowledge and ability in process engineering disciplines.
  • Thorough knowledge of manufacturing processes, tooling, and equipment, including their relationship to the Global Launch Process and Vehicle Development Process.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results.
  • Proven project management capability, with the ability to mentor and coach others in project management best practices.
  • Strong influencing skills and the ability to act as a change agent across the organization.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% , within the U.S. and internationally, as required by project phases.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience scoping, designing, integrating, and commissioning various levels of automation projects (including GA tooling and systems).
  • Experience working in a unionized manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of manufacturing processes, tooling, and equipment, and how they interface with the Global Launch Process and Vehicle Development Process.
  • Knowledge and hands-on familiarity with general assembly tooling automation, concepts, and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Define all areas of change, including product and manufacturing requirements (tooling, automation, workstation layout, facilities, etc.).
  • Analyze and design efficient material flow and future-state material movement strategies.
  • Develop interfaces and work with cross-functional teams to define and deploy common tooling, processes, and standards across the department and enterprise.
  • Provide technical direction to, and oversight of, outside vendors and internal product/plant teams.
  • Lead the design, construction, integration, plant installation, launch, and continuous improvement of equipment and tools required to produce high-quality vehicles.
  • Lead coordination of automation projects, including all plant integration and pull-ahead activities with Continuous Improvement leads and Plant ME/IE teams.
  • Coordinate transparent, aligned project validation metrics driven by design capability and simulated site throughput standards.
  • Apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve complex, unusual issues in manufacturing and automation.
  • Utilize deep technical knowledge of automated processes to identify, evaluate, and implement optimization opportunities.
  • Conduct project plan reviews with local production management for future implementations, including understanding local contractual considerations.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to manufacturing and maintenance team members, production supervisors, and production associates.
  • Ensure projects meet financial and budget targets, tracking costs and savings against objectives.
  • Quickly interpret plant layouts and propose General Assembly automation concepts, tooling solutions, and integration approaches.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of Bill of Process (BOP) and Bill of Equipment (BOE) and their application in GA optimization.
  • Manage timing, resources, budget, lessons learned, performance scorecards, meeting minutes, and weekly one-page project status reports for all assigned projects.
  • Support vehicle performance integration, driving design solutions to integration issues impacting General Assembly.
  • Own engineering deliverable status for Program Execution Teams and Program Quality Readiness Reviews.
  • Provide engineering launch leadership, including on-site support at assembly plant launches.
  • Run vehicle and progress integration meetings, ensuring clear communication of status, risks, and actions.
  • Serve as the engineering interface to plant operations, including build support, issue resolution, Bill of Materials accuracy, and final vehicle completeness.
