About The Position

We are seeking a hands-on, technically driven Manufacturing Engineering Intern to support design, engineering, production, and quality teams in the areas of additive manufacturing, robotics & automation, and quality control systems. This internship provides exposure to high-tech manufacturing processes, equipment troubleshooting, data analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives. You will work directly with designers, engineers, operators, and technicians to help improve part quality, enhance automation reliability, and develop efficient, repeatable processes across the production floor.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related technical program.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in hands-on technical troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, etc.); slicing or CAM experience is a plus.
  • Basic understanding of additive manufacturing principles, robotics, or quality tools (SPC, GD&T, metrology).
  • Strong problem-solving, data analysis, and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working in a production or lab environment.
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily operation and maintenance of industrial 3D printers (polymer/metal depending on facility).
  • Support build preparation: slicing, part orientation, material loading, and job setup.
  • Perform post-processing, including cleaning, support removal, inspection, and finishing.
  • Conduct basic testing to evaluate materials, design parameters, and print-process improvements.
  • Document AM workflows and help refine work instructions, setup sheets, and quality checks.
  • Support programming, setup, and troubleshooting of robotic arms, collaborative robots, and automated cells.
  • Assist with path adjustments, end-of-arm tooling changes, and cycle-time optimization (with supervision).
  • Help analyze automation performance using production data and suggest improvements.
  • Contribute to fixture updates, sensor checks, basic PLC interaction, and equipment documentation.
  • Perform dimensional inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and CMM or laser scanners (under supervision).
  • Collect and analyze data for first-article inspections, capability studies, and process validations.
  • Support quality engineers in root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and documentation updates.
  • Assist in maintaining quality records, inspection logs, and audit-ready documentation.
  • Evaluate additive-manufactured and robot-handled components for defects, accuracy, and process variation.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities (Lean, 5S, waste reduction).
  • Help design or modify fixtures, jigs, and tools using CAD software.
  • Collaborate with production teams to diagnose equipment issues or workflow gaps.
  • Support time studies, process mapping, and other manufacturing engineering analyses.
