Manufacturing Engineering Intern - Indianapolis, IN As an Allegion Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you will contribute meaningful work and make a direct impact to the Assembly, Coatings, Fabrication, and New Product Development projects in the Exits business unit. You will gain valuable experience in tooling, equipment and process design as you support new product launches, apply problem solving tools and make improvements in our existing manufacturing processes. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers, value stream coaches and operators in operations, maintenance, materials, and engineering to learn how we maintain and improve our processes, and to develop hands-on skills in process capability analysis and improvement. This role will be a full-time summer internship (10-12 weeks) based at our Indianapolis Exits facility. This opportunity will offer a competitive hourly rate and a flexible start date between May and June ending in August. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Change Management, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering (ME) or Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) or related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and initiative e.g. school club officer, sports team captain, resident advisor, leadership on school or work projects, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort with accessing, organizing, and presenting complex data using multiple software platforms
  • Effective listening, time management and creative problem-solving techniques
  • A desire to learn, grow and develop by working on projects that will impact Allegion’s business and customers
  • Experience or familiarity with 3D Modeling in Creo or other modeling package.
  • Familiarity with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint) and eagerness to learn process-control software
  • Strong analytical mindset and attention to detail
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-starter attitude; able to manage multiple small tasks under supervision
  • Proactively collaborate with employees across groups

Nice To Haves

  • In addition, you ideally have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and some previous work experience; if not, we’re happy to provide all the support you will need to succeed in our summer internship

Responsibilities

  • Implement tactical strategies to achieve the desired vision and execute long and short-term objectives to support the value stream’s goals.
  • Support the Lean initiatives in collaboration with the value stream team through operational design, process improvements, and systems support utilizing value stream mapping techniques.
  • Provide effective project updates to Value Stream Leadership on key metrics and sustainability.
  • Participate in and actively direct Gemba Walks and educating others on continuous improvement including takt time attainment and Lean methodologies.
  • Implement and maintain visual performance tools.
  • Analyze existing business processes and software for potential design improvements
  • Assist in daily monitoring of finishing processes: plating, powder coat, e-coat, and anodizing
  • Gather and organize process data (bath chemistry, line speed, quality metrics) for team review
  • Support root-cause investigations into out-of-spec conditions under guidance of senior engineers
  • Participate in small improvement projects, such as optimizing rinse cycles or fixture designs
  • Help maintain process documentation (work instructions, SOPs, batch records) and update logs
  • Shadow cross-functional teams in maintenance, materials management, and production planning
  • Contribute to process capability studies: collect sample data, calculate Cp/Cpk, and prepare simple charts
  • Present findings and recommendations at intern roundtables or team meetings
  • Provide solutions to support Safety, Quality and Delivery in the Assembly processes by leveraging DFA principles and LEAN production practices.
  • Intern will be responsible for designing engineering solutions for tooling, fixturing and/or controls while they are part of the Indy Ops process engineering team as they support new product launches.
  • Will design equipment/tooling, quote equipment, present options, and execute options including ordering, build (with supplier, maintenance, tool room, controls and engineering support).
  • Solutions will be implemented for pilot build preparation, launch, and existing products.
