About The Position

Editorial Services works closely with Medical & Scientific Services, Project Management, Account Services, and Creative Services teams to deliver clear, concise, and precise content. The Managing Medical Editor oversees a team of editors in ensuring deliverables meet the highest standards of quality and accuracy, primarily through editing content for accuracy, clarity, consistency, grammar, and style. Core responsibilities and qualifications are noted as follows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of progressive professional medical or science editing experience
  • Experience in directly managing a team of editors, and owning the editorial workflow and process, specifically within a medical communications agency
  • Strong understanding of the peer-review process and editorial best practices
  • Strong familiarity with MS Office Suite (especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), Adobe Creative Suite (especially Acrobat), EndNote, and medical literature databases (eg, PubMed)
  • Experience in mock journal and congress submissions and in collating a list of requirements needed for submission
  • Experience in submitting abstracts to congresses and manuscripts to journals
  • Ability to prioritize projects, collaborate on team projects, and coordinate and execute multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment to serve many therapeutic teams and meet project goals
  • Ability to acquire relevant information from a variety of sources (eg, published style manuals, journal guidelines, and literature searches) and maintain accurate records of sources
  • Excellent knowledge of grammar, usage, and medical writing style guidelines (such as the AMA Manual of Style)
  • Familiarity with general scientific and medical concepts and ability to grasp more complex scientific and medical applications
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Effective attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to identify key issues and creatively and strategically overcome challenges
  • Ability to think analytically and to effectively plan, prioritize, and execute assigned tasks

  • The following active credentials are considered a plus: Editor in the Life Sciences (ELS), Certified Medical Publication Professional (ISMPP CMPP™)
  • Strong familiarity with the following is considered a plus: Veeva annotations; Google analytics, SEO strategies; copyright requirements and familiarity with requesting and purchasing figure/table use permissions

Responsibilities

  • Oversee a team of medical editors and freelancers, ensuring consistent, timely, and high-quality deliverables
  • Own, train on, and hold editorial team accountable for editorial processes and documentation
  • Work closely with project management, medical, and design teams to plan out and meet publication and production timelines
  • Edit (for flow and structure), copy edit, and style all forms of deliverables, including medical affairs, commercial, patient, and payor communications and publications; examples include (but are not limited to) manuscripts, abstracts, posters, oral presentations, slides, meeting materials, brochures, print and digital tools, mailings and handouts, video scripts, websites, and other digital assets
  • Ensure that all deliverables meet the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style, journal or congress guidelines, client corporate and brand style guidelines, agency style guidelines, and all Citrus editorial, publication, and ethical procedures
  • Proofread initial layouts (document or digital), and incorporation of changes into layout, provided by Creative Services; manuscript page proofs provided by journals
  • Collaborate with Medical and Scientific Services team to ensure the accuracy and completeness of content via fact check of data points and close review of reference lists
  • Serve as subject-matter expert regarding client and agency style, AMA style, structure, grammar, usage, and congress and journal standards
  • Identify project areas that may require expertise from other team members and elicit input as appropriate
  • Assist colleagues with editorial problem-solving, troubleshooting, and brainstorming
  • Attend product status meetings to keep abreast of upcoming or in-progress editorial projects
