About The Position

HRCLS is looking for a full-time Managing Lawyer for the Civil Law Practice , based in Wodonga, VIC. Reporting to the Principal Lawyer, this role will contribute to managing program deliverables and overseeing service delivery activities of the practice ensuring high-quality legal assistance services are delivered in a trauma-informed way. More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to: Providing high-quality legal assistance, including complex casework and court representation Supervising and mentoring a team of lawyers and legal staff Overseeing legal compliance, risk, and quality assurance within practice Deputising for the Principal Lawyer in their absence Contributing to law reform and advocacy in civil law and access to justice Strengthening partnerships and participating in community legal education Supporting operational planning, reporting, and service delivery targets Championing workplace safety, wellbeing, and child-safe practices Promoting a values-based, inclusive, and culturally safe organisational culture This is more than a legal role - it’s a chance to mentor, inspire and shape the careers of early-career lawyers in a team that values learning, empathy, and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Hold (or be eligible to hold) an unrestricted practising certificate in Australia
  • Demonstrated senior legal experience in civil law
  • A commitment to cultural humility, social justice, and community empowerment
  • Leadership capability with a collaborative, inclusive supervision style
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Adaptability, empathy, and a reflective practice mindset
  • A strong desire to invest in the growth and development of junior lawyers
  • Hold a current C Class Driver’s Licence
  • Either hold or be eligible to obtain a Working with Children Clearance and a clear National Police Check
  • Weekly travel to regional communities is also required (with fleet vehicles provided)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supervising or mentoring legal practitioners or PLT students
  • Experience providing legal representation in courts and tribunals, including the Magistrates’ Court and the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA).
  • Strong knowledge of issues affecting vulnerable clients in regional and remote areas
  • Experience in trauma-informed or community legal practice settings
  • Familiarity with Victorian and NSW legal frameworks, or a willingness to learn
