About The Position

The Met's Department of Education is dedicated to making art meaningful and accessible for everyone and is central to the mission of the Museum. The Department is a national and international leader in museum-based education and public programming, pushing boundaries through continuous innovation and experimentation. In-person and virtual programs include high school and college internships that promote career development and diversity; PreK-12 educator programs that train teachers to integrate art into curricula across disciplines; performances, concerts, lectures and symposia that feature preeminent artists and scholarship; daily tours in multiple languages, and so much more. As the Managing Educator, Family & Teen Programs, you will provide strategic leadership and comprehensive oversight of The Met's Family & Teen Programs that include festivals, the 81st St Studio, and targeted activities for intergenerational audiences and teens that foster meaningful engagement with works of art. You will define and guide education programming and partnerships to expand audiences and position The Met as a leader of high-impact, high-quality, holistic learning programs. You will lead a team of staff, contractual educators & volunteers to ensure programming needs are met.

Requirements

  • M.A. in Museum Education, Art History, Education, or other related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in museum education.
  • Demonstrated leadership in supervising and mentoring staff within a complex institutional environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to effectively and professionally communicate with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Excellent organizational skills, follow-through, problem-solving skills, and ability to develop effective systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence with original works of art in a museum or gallery setting.
  • Administrative and management experience including developing and managing budgets.
  • Record of collaboration with Development in fundraising initiatives for education programs.
  • Knowledge of current learning theories and pedagogies for intergenerational audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Some evening and weekend hours required.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee development and implementation of annual budget, interdisciplinary pedagogy, programming, and systematic evaluation for all programs and resources for family and teen audiences.
  • Develop and implement long-term audience and program strategies for the 81st Street Studio as a site of interdisciplinary art, music, and science exploration.
  • Optimize resources and staffing, informed by learning theory, evaluation, and audience research.
  • Guide interdepartmental process to plan and create new material-focused content.
  • Supervise a team of staff in a high-paced environment, instilling high performance levels and accountability.
  • Provide general oversight to contractual educators/teaching artists, Education Department volunteers, and interns/fellows.
  • Play a leading role in conceptualizing high-visibility programs; manage cross-departmental teams.
  • Assess content, formats, and audiences of existing programs and propose innovations and initiatives to optimize offerings.
  • Initiate and sustain productive relationships across the department and the Museum, including Curatorial departments.
  • Develop and manage the area's annual budget, work closely with the Development Department to secure program support.
  • Actively engage in the wider arts, STEAM, and music education communities by initiating and sharing research.
