United’s Corporate Medical Director provides consultation for health-related initiatives to support United’s commitment to safe operations. A significant part of this role involves pilot health and compliance with federal requirements for their well-being, especially when returning to work from medical absences, to ensure flight safety. The Corporate Medical Director is responsible for United’s internal Employee Assistance Program for all employees and the Human Intervention Motivational Study (HIMS) program specifically for pilots. This role collaborates on medical-related initiatives, provides medical expertise to operational, legal, and labor relations groups, and represents Corporate Safety. The Corporate Medical Director maintains relationships with external health organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to monitor global health risks impacting United’s operations. This position works closely with Business Continuity Planning and Emergency Response to develop and initiate responses to health-related disruptions such as pandemics. The role also engages with medical experts in the aviation community through organizations like Airlines for America (A4A) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and supports the broader Corporate Safety organization in strategies for improving worker safety and preventing workplace injuries.
