The Rippleworks Capital team is responsible for supporting the deployment of ~$70M in the form of loans (30%) and grants (70%) annually. The Managing Director - Capital will evolve and advance Rippleworks’ investment strategy to maximize impact by providing flexible forms of funding to social ventures in the Rippleworks portfolio. You will drive the Rippleworks investment process to be lean, anti-bureaucratic and pro-venture. The Managing Director - Capital will manage the team to work across the full investment lifecycle of sourcing, diligence, investment recommendations, learning and active portfolio management. You will engage with key internal stakeholders, including working with the Programs teams and Portfolio teams to constantly evaluate how capital can accelerate impact in partnership with Rippleworks non-capital programs. You’ll also partner with external stakeholders including impact investors, entrepreneurs, investees or grantees, and market-building organizations to drive greater impact. The Managing Director - Capital will report to the Managing Director - Programs and Capital, managing and mentoring a six-person team (two directors, two managers, two senior associates). The Managing Director - Capital will sit on the Rippleworks Leadership Team as well as the Programs & Capital Department Leadership Team, contributing to organization-wide strategy and culture.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of professional work that includes building and developing teams, investing, and deeply understanding the challenges of social ventures
  • At least eight years of experience directly managing a grant and investment portfolio
  • Strong track record of building and maintaining authentic relationships with key stakeholders, specifically other investors
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate organizations for specific criteria, such as depth of impact, business model viability, stage of growth, strength of team
  • Track record of constructively challenging the way things are done in order to be lean, anti-bureaucratic, and pro-portfolio. You are on a mission to change the way funders show up and to reduce the related power dynamics.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including experience interacting with investors, executives, and entrepreneurs
  • Track record of leading teams to execute and deliver results
  • Ability to lead multiple, diverse teams to accomplish shared goals

Responsibilities

  • Strategically align Rippleworks' investment strategy with the organization's broader strategy of supporting the best social entrepreneurs in achieving significant scale. This includes direct investments and funding through collaborative philanthropy partnerships.
  • Manage, develop and coach the team
  • Support the team in executing a venture-friendly strategy and process for making, structuring and monitoring investments
  • Fund a world-class portfolio of high-impact, scalable social ventures
  • Work in partnership with the Sourcing team to develop and maintain strong and authentic relationships with aligned investors
  • Sit on the Rippleworks Leadership Team and Programs & Capital Department Leadership team, and participate in formulating the operationalization of Rippleworks' strategic direction
  • Collect, analyze, synthesize learning from the Rippleworks portfolio to answer whether Rippleworks is driving the type of impact we seek to have in the world; recommend shift in strategy to drive increased impact
  • Be a thought leader; influence the ecosystem to drive greater impact
  • Oversee the Capital team’s work to build out its support for Scaling Essentials; critical venture-level capabilities that the Rippleworks Capital team can uniquely support in addition to direct funding

While Rippleworks has one global salary structure, the salary listed here reflects employees on US payroll.
