Purpose of Position: The Manager, Veterinarians leads the veterinary team in delivering high-quality medical care within a fast-paced, mission-driven shelter environment. This role provides support, consultation, and guidance to staff veterinarians on case management, diagnostics, and clinical decision-making, while also fostering learning and professional growth across the team. Responsibilities Shelter Veterinary Medicine Lead and participate in the day-to-day work of the Shelter Veterinary Services (SVS) doctor team in partnership with and at the direction of the Director, Shelter Medicine and Animal Health. Provide veterinary care, as needed, including public appointments, physical exams, diagnostics, High Quality/High Volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN), dentistry, soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, owner requested euthanasia, and necropsies. Maintain medical and recordkeeping protocols to ensure consistency, safety, and compliance with state and federal regulations. Oversee management of caseload and workflows to balance efficiency with quality and welfare outcomes, guided by the shelter scope of care. Monitor and analyze key performance metrics related to processes, animal health, outcomes, and program effectiveness. Support innovation in veterinary practices, data-driven decision-making, and emerging best practices in shelter medicine. Assist in developing and implementing Humane Colorado specific training programs regarding veterinary care as requested. Veterinary Internship and Externship Program Support the veterinary intern match program. Support the veterinary externship program. Coach and mentor veterinary interns and externs and Veterinary Professional Associates (VPAs) in their provision of veterinary medicine. Leadership Directly coach and mentor Veterinarians on a day-to-day basis, specifically in their provision of veterinary medicine. Provide guidance to SVS Veterinarians on management of cases, advocating for the best outcome for individual animals while considering overall shelter population and resources and the organization's scope of care. Collaborate with leadership across departments in the development, implementation, and monitoring of medical programs that improve the standard of animal and veterinary care. Manage and develop an effective staff: provide effective communication, leadership, guidance and resources. Determine staff qualifications and competency; recruit, interview, select, hire, train, orient, mentor, evaluate, coach, counsel, discipline, and reward. Establish and monitor staff safety and regulatory compliance. Work in collaboration with the Development and Communications teams to support fundraising efforts and campaigns, such as providing impact stories and reports resulting in financial support. Participate in donor events, meetings, and tours. Integrate VPAs, externs, and interns into the workforce, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, professional growth, and development while ensuring effective collaboration and skill-building opportunities. Compensation: Starting at $140,000 - $165,000 annually (starting pay commensurate with market, experience, and equity) We will begin reviewing applications as they are received and anticipate closing the application period on December 25, 2025. Work Conditions and Physical Requirements Handle and restrain animals of various sizes, weights, and temperaments. Subject to animal bites or scratches. Work performed in high noise level areas. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces. Exposure to radiation in association with performing radiology procedures. Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping, standing, climbing stairs, and walking. Repetitive motion associated with medical and surgical care. Frequent lifting of animals and objects with reasonable accommodation. As the shelter operates 24/7, assume occasional overnight on call responsibilities. These responsibilities are remote telemedicine consults with overnight shelter staff or foster parents, not in-person.
