About The Position

Manages the Utility Plant Operations, including the day-to-day activities of the Central Heating Plant and steam distribution operations, as well as oversight for other utilities on campus, which may include chilled water, water, sewer, and storm water utilities. These activities include operations, maintenance, metering, energy management and reporting, and other utilities programs. Supervises personnel assigned to utilities and functions as a working supervisor when necessary. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of non-immigrant or immigrant visa status through Wake Forest University. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or technical field of study plus five to seven years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of one year of experience with steam boilers is required.
  • Technical knowledge of steam plants and associated systems, along with generally accepted practices related to mechanical systems.
  • Technical knowledge of steam and HW boilers, chiller plants, water/sewer, electrical, and associated systems
  • Ability to supervise and direct maintenance and operational personnel in daily functions.
  • Ability to manage and monitor financial performance of utility budgets.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and maintain a cost-effective renewal and preventive maintenance program for University heating plants and other utilities as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to research and analyze problems with University heating plants and other utilities.
  • Ability to direct mechanical repairs on plant equipment.
  • Ability to monitor and operate plant systems through use of computer software and other means and/or instrumentation.
  • Valid Driver's License with good driving record; must be insurable.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, rotating shifts, and after hours as required.
  • This position may be designated as essential personnel to support business continuity in the event of campus emergencies, disasters, or other special needs as directed by management. Essential personnel are subject to recall inside/outside their regular schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the operation & maintenance of the central steam plant and steam distribution systems.
  • Responsible for staffing, management of staff, and operations related to the day-to-day operations, as well as maintenance programs.
  • Manages the Utilities Operations Center, the after-hours call center, and utility systems monitoring.
  • Develops and /or maintains preventative maintenance programs related to utility systems and equipment.
  • Establish and enforce plant operating procedures and safety protocols for utility plants.
  • Coordinate outage planning, system shutdowns, and emergency response to minimize campus impact.
  • Develops and/or maintains production metrics and reports for utility plants, including fuel consumption, efficiency, steam generation, chilled water production, pollution control data, water analysis, and other utility reports as required.
  • Develops and/or maintains the sub-metering program and production metrics and reports for utility plants, including fuel consumption, efficiency, steam generation, chilled water production, pollution control data, water analysis, and other utility reports as required.
  • Works with the Director of Utilities and Energy to establish and maintain an energy conservation program.
  • Works to provide energy program support, data, and data ownership for programs such as Gordian (sight lines) and the carbon reduction initiative.
  • Acts as a liaison between key utilities & interface providers such as Duke Energy, Piedmont Natural Gas, Winston-Salem Water & Sewer, and campus control vendors.
  • Manages and efficiently monitors the plant budget and all expenditures across utility plants, and assists with the management of a renewal program to ensure utility plant equipment upgrades and replacements are strategically planned.
  • Support forecasting of utility costs and long-term energy planning and investment.
  • Oversees other special projects as directed by management.
  • Working with the Director of Utilities and Energy, works with plant staff and maintenance teams to develop and foster a strong sense of teamwork throughout campus.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including boiler inspections, emissions standards, and safety codes pertaining to pressure vessels.
  • Assist in the collaboration with sustainability, engineering, and capital projects teams on energy conservation measures and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Reports all matters of safety to the appropriate Director of Utilities and Energy Management and to the Safety Director if necessary.
  • Follows all University and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Supervises utilities staff, including foreperson, operators, and technicians, including scheduling and assignment of work, reviewing performance, recommending salary actions, promotions or discharges.
