About The Position

As a member of the Global Tax Audit team, the Manager, Tax Audits contributes specialized corporate income tax knowledge and skill to support the Department business objective of minimizing the tax burden of Marriott International, Inc. The mission of this position is to efficiently and effectively process and close state income tax examinations to reduce the amount of tax paid under audit. A key component of this position is to establish cooperative relationships throughout the Company and to maintain professional relationships with state/local tax authorities.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years corporate income tax experience.
  • ASC 740 knowledge of federal book to tax differences and tax accounting for state tax attributes (NOLs, credits, etc.).
  • Solid qualitative and quantitative analytical skills; ability to take large volumes of complex information and present it in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work both independently and as part of a team to include supervising staff.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to effectively comprehend information and articulate technical issues to a variety of individuals at multiple levels within and outside the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to maintain effective relationships with internal associates and external auditors.
  • At ease in an environment of change; comfort with challenging status quo to improve effectiveness.
  • Undergraduate degree in finance, accounting, economics or similar business concentration required

Responsibilities

  • Handle large, complex state income tax audits independently with limited oversight.
  • Research, interpret and document state tax statutes, regulations and cases to develop and defend state tax positions.
  • Negotiate issues proposed by auditors through settlement and/or prepare protests and attend appeals hearings.
  • Ascertain controversies requiring additional assistance and work directly with outside counsel to manage contentious issues through state appeals process.
  • Identify alternative favorable tax filing positions resulting from exposure to audits.
  • Prepare and/or review written analysis, and participate in the assessment and communication of tax risks under audit in accordance with accounting and tax requirements.
  • Manage the notice inventory to ensure timely resolution of all federal and state correspondence including desk audits.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the control, efficiency and results of the overall notice process.
  • Correspond with the designated IRS Service Center representative to resolve federal collection notices and transcript discrepancies.
  • Advise Department of future tax return filing adjustments resulting from notices.
  • Provide support for the federal income tax examination as requested.
  • Provide assistance in identifying and utilizing state incentive programs to reduce income tax liability.
  • Provide support to amend state returns resulting from federal audit resolutions.
  • Assist with various other tax-related projects including working with outside advisors as necessary to meet business needs.
