About The Position

Our Cloud Infrastructure team is growing! This team ensures the security and resiliency of Appian's Cloud offering, enabling Appian teams to deploy and operate secure, cloud-native services and resources. As a Manager of Software Development within this team, you will provide technical leadership in a specific technology area while actively contributing to the development of high-quality software. You will spend the majority of your time hands-on, designing, coding, and reviewing, while also mentoring engineers to grow their skills and managing key HR responsibilities. By fostering a collaborative environment and removing obstacles, you will help developers write and test code efficiently before pushing changes to source control, aligning technical efforts with business goals. This role is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Appian was built on a culture of in-person collaboration, which we believe is a key driver of our mission to be the best. Requirements

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years in software development or cloud infrastructure engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience mentoring or managing a technical team.
  • Proven experience building, scaling, and managing containerized, cloud-native platforms, with strong AWS expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate secure, cloud-native platforms leveraging deep expertise in AWS core services (e.g., EKS, VPC, IAM, EC2, S3, RDS).
  • Apply Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles using modern tooling such as Terraform, Crossplane, or similar to automate platform delivery.
  • Drive adoption of modern CI/CD pipelines and promote an "automation-first" mindset across teams.
  • Provide deep technical guidance in cloud infrastructure, performing code reviews and offering actionable technical feedback.
  • Manage and mentor up to 6 direct reports, guiding their career development and fostering a culture of learning and growth.
  • Perform HR management tasks for direct reports, including performance reviews, timesheet approvals, and compensation discussions.
