About The Position

OBJECTIVE: Support COSI’s mission by managing and executing the operational delivery of COSI’s volunteer program. This role oversees recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, deployment, and daily management of volunteers to ensure volunteers effectively support onsite operations, guest experience, and institutional needs. The Manager leads the Volunteer Experiences Team and ensures alignment with operational priorities and strategies established by the Sr. Director of Onsite Operations.   POSITION REQUIREMENTS / EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Ideal candidate demonstrates strong operational leadership, team management, and organizational skills. The candidate must possess experience managing volunteer programs or staff within a complex operational environment. Strong coordination, scheduling, training, and supervisory skills are required. A college degree in management, communications, education or related field is recommended. A minimum of two to three years’ experience in the management of volunteers within a non-profit environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Volunteer Operations Management Manage daily operations of COSI’s volunteer program, ensuring effective deployment of volunteers across departments to support operational needs.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, recognition and retention of volunteers in alignment with operational priorities.
  • Ensure volunteers are effectively integrated into operations to support guest experience, programming, and facility operations.
  • Volunteer Leadership and Supervision Supervise, mentor, and develop volunteers, including work study students and internships.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, establish clear expectations, and ensure accountability for operational outcomes.
  • Provide leadership and support to ensure consistent volunteer supervision across operational areas.
  • Operational Coordination Collaborate with operational and departmental leaders to identify volunteer staffing needs and ensure appropriate volunteer placement.
  • Ensure volunteers are scheduled, deployed, and utilized effectively to support daily operations and special events.
  • Monitor volunteer engagement and operational effectiveness and implement improvements to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Program Administration Oversee volunteer database integrity, service tracking, reporting, and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Ensure volunteer onboarding, training, and operational processes are executed consistently and effectively.
  • Manage volunteer program operational budgets and resource allocation in coordination with the Sr. Director of Onsite Operations.
  • Volunteer Engagement and Retention Foster a positive and professional volunteer experience aligned with COSI’s operational and guest experience standards.
  • Ensure volunteers are properly trained, supported, and recognized to maintain strong retention and performance.
  • Support general COSI operations through participation in meetings and onsite operations as appropriate. Onsite operations experiences include but are not limited to on-stage shows, the High Wire Unicycle, and guest interactions with animals.
  • Serve as an example to other COSI Team Members and Volunteers in matters of appearance, attitude, and performance in a manner best serving COSI paid and Volunteer Team Members and Guests.
  • In accordance with COSI's Guest Services Strategy, and as opportunities present themselves, provide excellence in Guest Services by assuring Guest safety, using courtesy to drive each Guest interaction, by delivering the COSI show, and by keeping operations efficient.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Sr. Director of Onsite Operations.
