About The Position

Bronson Battle Creek Hospital is seeking an experienced Manager of Nursing to lead its Birthplace inpatient services, including Labor & Delivery, Mother Baby, and Antepartum. This is a key leadership role overseeing clinical operations, staff engagement, quality outcomes, and patient experience within the maternal–newborn program. The Nurse Manager provides leadership oversight for clinical practice, staffing, quality, safety, and professional development, partnering closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure excellent patient care and employee engagement. The role involves supervising professional and ancillary personnel in nursing care and managing the overall operation of an assigned nursing unit, with considerable freedom in deciding procedures. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. The Bronson Battle Creek Birthplace is a modern inpatient setting offering comprehensive maternal–newborn care, featuring a 15-bed unit with 11 Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) beds, 4 Antepartum/Post‑Op beds, 2 Operating Rooms, 3 Triage bays, and a Newborn nursery, serving pregnant, laboring, and postpartum patients, as well as healthy newborns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • 3-5 years of progressively more responsible clinical and supervisory nursing experience
  • Current RN license in good standing in the state of Michigan
  • BLS certification
  • Ability to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with record keeping in the department
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment associated with the delivery patient care on the floors
  • Ability to work as a team member and be able to communicate effectively with visitors, physicians, hospital personnel, and administrative staff with tact in order to handle sensitive matters

Responsibilities

  • Supervising the activities of professional and ancillary personnel engaged in the provision of nursing care and managing the overall operation of an assigned nursing unit.
  • Providing leadership oversight for clinical practice, staffing, quality, safety, and professional development.
  • Partnering closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure excellent patient care and employee engagement.
  • Participating in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making.
  • Developing and administering procedures necessary to implement approved policies and providing the overall direction necessary to ensure efficient and effective services.
  • Directing the preparation of departmental records as well as recurring and special reports and analyses, ensuring that they are complete, accurate and prepared on time.
  • Reviewing and interpreting reports in order to ascertain the extent to which departmental goals are being achieved and taking corrective action as necessary.
  • Facilitating participation of staff in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making.
  • Ensuring staff attendance at shared governance meetings.
  • Working closely with unit councils facilitating implementation of decisions that improve patient outcomes, improve patient safety and support professional practice.
  • Accepting organizational accountability for services provided to recipients.
  • Evaluating the quality and appropriateness of care.
  • Facilitating nurse and other staff member participation in interdisciplinary identification of desired client-centered outcomes.
  • Regularly reviewing the nursing care plans for patients to determine their effectiveness in meeting established goals for care and treatment, adherence to hospital and unit policies and procedures, and conformance with established nursing standards.
  • Ensuring nursing care staff is working within their legal scope of practice.
  • Providing culturally competent resources and education for multi-cultural patient and families.
  • Initiating appropriate action to correct or enhance nursing care plan when necessary.
  • Regularly reviewing work in progress to ensure that all treatment, medications, and diagnostic tests ordered by physicians are promptly implemented and properly recorded, and the staff performance conforms to established standards and guidelines.
  • Facilitating nurse participation in the monitoring and evaluation of nursing care in accordance with established professional, regulatory, and organizational standards of practice.
  • Advocating on behalf of patient and family, ensuring fair and ethical treatment.
  • Ensuring staff follows documentation requirements.
  • Providing guidance for and supervision of personnel accountable to the nurse manager.
  • Directly assisting personnel accountable to the nurse manager in execution of the most difficult and /or sensitive clinical duties and responsibilities, providing counsel and guidance in unusual but less complex situations, and serving as a resource at all times.
  • Coordinating nursing services with the services of other health care disciplines.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with physicians, and other members of the healthcare team in order to coordinate and facilitate the delivery of optimal patient care.
  • Participating in the recruitment, selection and retention of personnel.
  • Hiring, mentoring-training, developing, evaluating and (when necessary) disciplining and discharging personnel accountable to the nurse manager or making authoritative recommendation in such matters.
  • Promoting retention of personnel through recognition of positive performance.
  • Assuming responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel.
  • Assuring appropriate orientation, educations, credentialing, and continuing professional development for personnel.
  • Evaluating performance of personnel.
  • Evaluating information obtained from (a) personal observations, (b) communications with staff, (c) rounds with medical and allied personnel, (d) communications with patients and family and (e) chart review to determine quality of care and the patients progress toward established outcomes.
  • Investigating and resolving incidents and complaints/suggestions from physicians, patients, visitors, and staff: correcting deficiencies (if any) and preparing documentation or explanation when appropriate.
  • Participating in planning and monitoring the budget for their defined areas.
  • Participating in the development of short and long term goals for his/her unit, and plans to accomplish agreed upon goals.
  • Developing, securing approval of and administering the budget which provides for the attainment of unit goals and in accordance with approved plans.
  • Participating and involving the nursing staff in evaluative research activities.
  • Fostering a climate conducive to educational experiences for nursing and other students.
  • Providing for the development and continuing education of unit staff by identifying educational needs, recommending the development of educational programs, providing for staff participation in work-related seminars and in service programs, and encouraging staff development activities.
  • Remaining abreast of developments in appropriate clinical areas of nursing and management.
  • Fostering peer review.
  • Maintaining a safe environment in accordance with nursing standards, hospital policies, and safety regulations.
  • Ensuring that unit supply inventory levels are maintained and monitors usage to determine the need for changes.
  • Ensuring the proper operation of unit equipment/securing the repair of unit equipment by initiating work order.
  • Monitoring the administration, documentation, and safekeeping of all controlled medications maintained on the unit.
  • Responsible for unit compliance with standards and guidelines and promulgated by accrediting and regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for the deployment, integration, and modeling of the behaviors and standards of Bronson’s Plan for Excellence in areas of direct responsibility and throughout the entire Bronson Healthcare Group.
