Manager of Industrial Hygiene The incumbent is responsible for directing and supporting the Occupational Health activities at the Bayer Kansas City site; as well as supporting management in its overall goals for freedom to operate and Bayer’s reputation. The responsibility includes the development, implementation, administration and/or monitoring of the OH management systems and programs in the following areas: injury/illness/workers compensation, medical surveillance, disability, wellness/health promotion, physician services, EAP, and Occupational Health compliance with local, state and federal regulations. In addition, the candidate will support and collaborate with the North America (NA) OM team to share best practices, to identify areas for improvement and to support the NA OM Lead in overall execution of the NA OM strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, or related field
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Effective communication, presentation, and training skills for levels of employees from laboratory analysts/plant operators to technical support staff to management, and customers
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs
  • Ability to interact and work with all levels of team and senior leadership to meet business deliverables
  • Identify, manage, champion change, and self-motivated;
  • Ability to identify and promote new ideas to improve team and areas of performance.
  • Experience with leading teams and ad hoc committees.

Nice To Haves

  • 8+ years of experience in Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, or related role in the chemical industry OR, Masters' degree in a scientific, engineering or technical discipline and a minimum of 6 years' experience in Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, or related role in the chemical industry

Responsibilities

  • Guide and assist line management in achieving Industrial Hygienist excellence
  • Provide answers to health-related concerns
  • Communicate regulatory changes
  • Participate in applicable safety reviews
  • Analyze plant/site practices
  • Lead an effective site industrial hygiene Exposure Assessment Program
  • Develop and implement annual exposure monitoring strategies for:
  • chemicals, noise, heat/cold stress, radiation, lead and asbestos
  • Select and supervise the purchases and use of monitoring equipment
  • Monitor and interpret results
  • Manage the industrial hygiene database
  • Provide current and historical industrial hygiene data and other reports to sampled employees and line management
  • Recommend methods to reduce employee or environmental exposures when appropriate
  • Manage site Hazard Communications Program
  • Maintain plant and site hazardous chemicals lists
  • Develop and monitor use of in-plant container labels at the Kansas City site
  • Manage Site Respiratory Protection Program
  • Participate in Kansas City emergency response efforts
  • Serve as a technical resource to Emergency Response Team
  • Facilitate investigations or analyses of incidents involving employee exposures to chemicals or noise
  • Improve employee health-related awareness/knowledge skills
  • Assist site Training Department with developing health-related training for employees and supervision
  • Develop and maintain professional expertise/certifications by participating in professional conferences, attending seminars, etc.
  • Assist line management with determining PPE requirements for employees/work tasks related to control of chemical and noise exposures
  • Review and evaluate pro ECTS for potential health issues
  • Review, remain current, and interact regularly with management on long range impact of local, state, and Federal occupational health regulations
  • Chemical Hygiene Officer for the sites laboratories
  • Serve as Site Laser Safety Officer/Secondary Radiation Safety
  • Knowledgeable of RCRA hazardous waste regulations, waste determinations, waste codes, and how to immediately communicate discovery of spills and leaks
  • Remain well-versed in labeling, inspection, and recordkeeping requirements to accumulate waste in:
  • satellite accumulation areas, containers, and tanks.
  • Manage one direct report.
  • Lead ergonomics focus improvement team.
