About The Position

The Controller’s Office manages the overall accounting and treasury service operations of the University in accordance with Federal, State, and University policies and procedures. This includes managing internal controls to mitigate risk; ensuring that the official accounting records of the University are current and accurate; safeguarding the assets of the University to minimize risk of financial loss; and developing and maintaining robust costing systems and reporting tools to provide high-quality financial information that supports schools, colleges, departments and the University’s strategic management initiatives. Position Summary The Manager of Financial Reporting and Investment Accounting (MFRIA) is responsible for the compilation of the University’s financial statements and maintains accounting records for the investment accounts of the University through the review of account statements or other sources of valuation. The MFRIA is in charge of recording of accounting entries, reconciliation of finance system balances, and maintenance of finance system processes which are posted to the investment accounts. The MFRIA maintains the endowment module for tracking and reporting all University endowments that hold shares of the pooled investments which comprise the Consolidated Endowment Fund. The MFRIA contributes to all matters of financial reporting along with other members of the Controller’s Office staff. This position also prepares detailed work papers for the annual audit and financial statements.

Requirements

  • Strong finance/accounting background, attention to detail, ability to reconcile general ledger accounts and demonstrate critical thinking.
  • Demonstrate a proficient level of professional skill and/or knowledge in accounting and keep current with developments and trends.
  • Knowledge and ability to use applicable information technology and systems to meet work needs.
  • Proficient in understanding and implementing GAAP.
  • Consistently current with Financial Accounting Standard pronouncements, not for profit accounting standards, and IRS reporting.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Develop financial models and/or reports as needed by executive management and the Board of Trustees.
  • Identifies opportunities to streamline the development of the university financial statements and other external reports.
  • Identify new opportunities to maximize the operational efficiencies of the university’s schools, colleges and departments as it relates to plant and endowment funds.
  • Monitor and collect data to assess accuracy and integrity; analyze data; ensure compliance with applicable standards, rules, regulations and systems of internal control; interpret and evaluate results, prepare documentation; create financial reports and/or presentations.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgement with respect to matters of significance.
  • Identifies non-routine transactions and matters and gathers relevant information to inform the appropriate management.
  • Clearly and concisely convey information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and the message.
  • Listen and respond appropriately to others and establish effective working relationships that foster organizational success throughout the University.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • 7-10 years of related accounting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Records and reconciles activity to the Consolidated Endowment Fund and other various investment accounts.
  • Records endowment buy-ins/buy-outs, transfers and other accounting entries.
  • Processes quarterly endowment spending distributions.
  • Prepares endowment and investment reports for Executive Management and the University’s Board of Trustees.
  • Compiles the University’s financial statements and prepares financial statement notes along with other Controller’s office staff.
  • Prepares Board of Trustee reports, including reports for the University’s Finance & Budget and Audit Committees.
  • Oversees the completion of the annual NACUBO-TIAA Study of University Endowments survey and other various investment and endowment surveys.
  • Prepares endowment and investment financial statement disclosures and supporting documentation for annual audit report.
  • Answers questions and provides support to university auditors regarding investment and endowment activity.
  • Answers questions and provides support to university Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) and other external investment managers and partners.
  • Reconciles non-cash gift and manager accounts, endowment cash, real estate and trusts.
  • Records and reconciles pledges and regular and testamentary binding bequests.
  • Monitors and reports short-term investment activity.
  • Assists in preparing projections and developing pro-forma financial statements and financial metrics.
  • Management duties include oversight of plant fund accounting team and advising business officers across campus as it relates to endowment accounting.
