About The Position

The Department of Entomology in the Ohio State College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) seeks a full-time Manager of Community Outreach, reporting to the chair of the Entomology Department. Position is based on the Ohio State CFAES Wooster campus. Work will be performed both remotely and in person, with regular travel to the Columbus campus and outreach locations expected. Must be an Ohio resident for remote work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3 years of relevant experience required, 4-8 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Must be comfortable working with live arthropod species, including insects, spiders, as well as other invertebrates, amphibians, and reptiles both exotic and native.
  • Must have experience maintaining live cultures of captive invertebrates.
  • Lift and carry 40 pounds and be able to stand and walk for extended lengths of time.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years’ experience developing and providing entomology outreach and evaluating programming.
  • Knowledge of the U.S.D.A. APHIS recordkeeping and permitting requirements related to exotic invertebrate species.
  • Budgetary and fundraising experience.
  • Experience managing a team of outreach professionals including managing students and volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to communicate with diverse clientele.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Mentorship Build a cohesive team to conduct the outreach mission of the Department of Entomology, supervising the Columbus and Wooster outreach teams, inclusive of the Columbus Insectary and BUGmobile operations, the Wooster United Titanium Bug Zoo, Pollinator and Pest Management programming and entomology personnel working with the C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students and volunteers to deliver quality public outreach, fostering a high quality, safe, and effective learning environment.
  • Outreach Programming Provide hands-on leadership, management, and innovation of Entomology’s public outreach activities, under minimal supervision. Develop intentional educational outreach activities focused on STEAM disciplines. Provide a robust portfolio of educational and enrichment programs in line with Ohio’s K-12 learning standards that serve local youth and the broader community. Collaborate with campus and community partners to ensure programming aligns with the CFAES and university's extension mission and provides an impactful experience for all participants. Coordinates with department faculty to ensure that high quality Pollinator and Pest Management extension programming is delivered.
  • Compliance, Animal Care and Culture Ensure programming and animal care adhere to appropriate safety standards and university, state, and federal policy compliance (including state and federal USDA permits, youth protection, risk management). Train staff and students in ethical animal handling and husbandry, and design of interpretive displays. Maintain insect specimen collections. Engage in conservation projects and collaborations.
  • Budget Oversight Work with fiscal officer to oversee budget for area and manage resources effectively, ensuring fiscal accountability. Develop relationships with community leaders and potential donors; find and apply for applicable grants.
  • Service Participate in student recruitment activities, assist with marketing and communication activities to effectively promote the entomology department’s outreach mission. Take part in appropriate departmental and college committees. Maintain professional affiliations. Other duties as assigned.
