About The Position

The Manager of Capital Improvements and Development is a senior leadership position responsible for developing and executing the company's capital investment strategy, growth initiatives, and supporting acquisition evaluations. This role sets strategic direction for all capital projects and facility expansions while managing a team that executes these initiatives across multiple sites. The position oversees capital budgets ranging from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dollars annually and plays a critical role in shaping the company's long-term growth trajectory. Reports to VP, Global Fabrication & Operational Corporate Development • Manufacturing & Operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Finance, or related field; MBA preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in capital project management, business development, or strategic operations
  • 5+ years in leadership roles managing teams and multimillion-dollar budgets
  • Proven track record leading large-scale capital projects ($50M+) and/or supporting acquisitions
  • Strong strategic thinking and business acumen with ability to see big picture while managing details
  • Financial expertise including capital budgeting, financial modeling, M&A valuation, and NPV/IRR analysis
  • Experience developing and executing multi-year strategic plans
  • Demonstrated success building and leading high-performing teams
  • Exceptional executive communication and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical capabilities
  • Ability to influence and drive alignment across all organizational levels
  • Willingness to travel to facility locations and acquisition targets (20%)

Nice To Haves

  • Background in manufacturing or multi-site industrial operations
  • M&A transaction experience including deal sourcing, due diligence, and integration
  • Experience managing capital programs in high-growth environments
  • Six Sigma or Lean background
  • Professional engineering license or PMP certification

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive capital investment strategy aligned with company growth objectives and market opportunities
  • Lead long-range capacity planning and facility expansion roadmap (3-5 year horizon)
  • Set priorities for capital allocation across competing projects, acquisitions, and growth initiatives
  • Present capital investment strategies and major project recommendations to executive leadership and board
  • Establish performance metrics and governance frameworks for capital projects organization-wide
  • Drive continuous improvement in capital project execution, leveraging lessons learned and best practices
  • Partner closely with Business Development team on acquisition opportunities, providing operational and capital investment expertise
  • Support Business Development in identifying target capabilities, facility requirements, and strategic fit assessments
  • Lead operational and technical due diligence process for potential acquisitions
  • Evaluate facility condition, capacity, equipment, processes, and capital investment requirements for acquisition targets
  • Develop comprehensive post-acquisition integration strategies and capital investment plans
  • Assess integration complexity, costs, and timeline requirements to support deal evaluation
  • Provide operational perspective on deal structure, terms, and valuation discussions
  • Develop and manage annual capital budget and multi-year capital plans totaling $XX-XXX million
  • Allocate capital resources across portfolio of projects based on strategic priorities and ROI
  • Monitor capital spending against budget and forecast, implementing corrective actions as needed
  • Approve project scopes, budgets, and timelines for major initiatives
  • Review and approve change orders and budget adjustments for active projects
  • Report capital spending, project pipeline, and ROI performance to executive leadership
  • Build and lead high-performing capital projects and development team
  • Directly manage Strategic Projects Manager and provide strategic guidance on project execution
  • Set performance objectives, conduct evaluations, and support career development for direct reports
  • Establish standard processes, tools, and methodologies for project management across the organization
  • Develop organizational capabilities to support increasing scale and complexity of capital initiatives
  • Foster culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and strategic thinking within the team
  • Partner with executive leadership to align capital strategy with business objectives
  • Collaborate closely with Business Development on acquisition opportunities, providing operational insights while Business Development leads target identification and deal origination
  • Work with Finance team on capital planning, funding strategies, and financial modeling
  • Partner with Director of Fabrication to ensure capital investments support operational excellence and efficiency goals
  • Engage with Mfg Engineering to ensure technical feasibility and innovation in expansion plans
  • Ensure alignment is in place with Facilities Engineering, Legal, and Distribution on all planned expansions and acquistions
  • Serve as primary interface between capital projects function and executive team
