About The Position

The Manager, Nursing Services provides nursing care through physical and mental assessments, laboratory testing, plans of care and therapeutic treatments. This role requires knowledge of a wide range of disorders including cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral, and involves performing crisis intervention. The Manager participates in the department's performance improvement and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, functioning as a leader in the nursing department with responsibility for maintaining compliance and ensuring overall nursing functions are followed. This position is responsible for maintaining a therapeutic milieu that is safe and focused on delivering quality patient care, which includes leading the team on shift through appropriate assignments and thorough communication. The Manager supervises and leads the nursing team, comprising RNs, LPN/LVNs, and MHTs, ensuring adherence to departmental policies and protocols. They assist the CNO with covering nursing vacancies across shifts and house-wide by managing FTEs. The role may involve interviewing potential candidates, providing training and education to new employees, and assisting with ongoing training needs. The Manager may also participate in hospital governance meetings, such as Performance Improvement or Safety, and is involved in conducting performance appraisals (90-day and annual), staff counselings, and corrective actions. Effective communication with other nursing leadership members is crucial for ongoing supervisor shift reports to keep leadership informed of acuity, incidents, etc. Collaboration with other departments, such as Intake, is required to ensure adequate and safe bed management functions. Additionally, the Manager may be required to review incident reports within the nursing department and communicate them to the CNO.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program.
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the state of employment.
  • CPR and hospital-selected de-escalation technique certification.
  • Three (3) years of nursing experience in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining a therapeutic milieu that is safe and focused on delivering quality patient care.
  • Leading the team that is on shift through appropriate assignments and thorough communication.
  • Conducting admission and daily shift nursing assessments for all patients.
  • Identifying and managing patient medical conditions and changes in patient condition.
  • Assessing pain and utilizing appropriate pain management techniques.
  • Providing education to patients and families.
  • Conducting medication reconciliation as part of the medication management process.
  • Administering medications utilizing safe medication practices and according to policy.
  • Knowledgeable of medications, including psychotropic drugs, and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Following Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) protocols.
  • Establishing and maintaining individualized treatment plans depending on patient need.
  • Working as an active member of the team and communicating with team members (physicians, therapists, administration, other departments etc.) regarding patient care issues.
  • Documenting based on the SUN policies.
  • Coordinating and supervising patient care as necessary.
  • Performing all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Competence in using electronic medical record and CPOE for all physician/Nurse Practitioner orders as well as wristband scanning prior to medication administration.
  • Functioning as a patient and family advocate, at all times.
  • Demonstrating the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Utilizing proper protocols for the use of Seclusion and Restraint, and the requirements associated with it.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Supervising and leading the nursing team that includes RN, LPN/LVN and MHTs in adhering to departmental policies and protocols.
  • Assisting the CNO with ensuring the nursing vacancies are covered from shift to shift and house wide, (managing FTEs).
  • May be involved in interviewing potential candidates as well as providing training and education to new employees.
  • Assisting with ongoing training and education needs.
