This requires us to deliver on our promises and always look for new opportunities to grow, both ourselves and our business.Job PurposeThis role is responsible for leadership and development of Electric Field Safety staff ensuring all safety programs, procedures, training, work practices and controls are effectively implemented for a variety of National Grid businesses in their designated geography. The role holder is responsible for identifying applicable safety regulations and risks in the designated geography while interacting with key stakeholders and New England Safety, Health, and Wellbeing team to implement acceptable systems in order to ensure compliance and conformance to Safety Policies and Management System.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Safety or related science/engineering field with Master’s preferred
  • 7+ years related experience within the field of safety management required
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply and modify complex theories and learned concepts appropriately.
  • Experience of managing the work of a technical functional team and demonstrates taking specific actions to enable the team to function efficiently and effectively.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in the areas of human resource management, negotiation and communication.
  • Understands theory behind policies and processes and demonstrates the ability to challenge existing processes and ways of working e.g., accident prevention and safety policy design.
  • Demonstrates the ability to network internally and externally and to develop successful, long-lasting business partnerships with others and seeks to understand and challenge business scenarios to the benefit of all parties.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist designation or related certification(s) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • The position is responsible for developing and implementing safety management systems, through the leadership of a team of field safety professionals and evaluating the effectiveness of safety policies to ensure National Grid's performance objectives are met while achieving regulatory compliance.
  • Managing a team, this includes several technical level positions.
  • Facilitation of program objectives and tracking, establishing and monitoring progress toward department goals.
  • Facilitation of program objectives completion by providing clear, continuous direction to the staff.
  • Identifying needed support from outside consultants, developing scopes of work and managing issuance of contracts.
  • Prepare and present reports to Executive Leadership.
  • Participation in budget preparation and tracking, establishing and monitoring progress toward department goals.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategic direction for all of New England Safety Health and Wellbeing.
  • Coordination and engagement of safety personnel and other personnel in the identification, development and implementation of Safety goals which will positively impact and add value to the organization.
  • Identifies and anticipates safety and health concerns and hazards by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions, rendering opinions on new equipment and procedures and recommending preventive programs.
  • Manage the implementation of safety programs in order to achieve efficient work practices and to ensure compliance with National Grid policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain systems and procedures for the business in order to enhance safety and operability.
  • Personally conduct field safety assessments and be visible in the field as a subject matter expert. This is to develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders in order to share best practice and understand and challenge business decisions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of current safety programs and corrective actions that have been implemented in relation to each business area. Challenge these existing processes and continuously seek ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies for the business.
  • Work in conjunction with each business area to promote current safety policy in order to generate awareness and evaluate the effectiveness of communicative actions.
  • Analyze key themes from a wide range of data sources in order to spot trends and identify how different scenarios may impact upon other regions and the wider National Grid business.
  • Manage the day-to-day relationship with contract service providers, including negotiation, interpretation and application of established contractual agreements to ensure adherence to standards and best outcomes for National Grid. The role holder would have responsibility for a safety related contractor while they remained on-site in each business area.
  • Interact with regulators (e.g., DOT & OSHA) as needed to ensure National Grid safety practices are in line with regulatory requirements and to respond to regulatory requests.
