Job Title: Manager, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Packaging Design Job Code: 35246 Job Location: San Diego, CA Job Schedule: 9/80- employees work 9 out of 14 days- totaling 80 hours worked- and have every other Friday off Job Description: L3Harris in San Diego, CA, is seeking a talented Mechanical Engineering Manager with management experience to join our team. In this role, you will manage a team of mechanical engineers while also contributing significantly as an individual contributor. You will play a key part in handling mechanical engineering responsibilities across various programs and internal development projects. Your tasks will encompass the design, layout, testing, and evaluation of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices and systems.

Requirements

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 9 years of prior relevant experience, or a Graduate Degree (MS/PhD) and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
  • In lieu of degree, 13 years of mechanical engineering experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Management experience, including leading and developing a team.
  • Electronic packaging experience for aviation or space environments.
  • CAD expertise using SolidWorks or CREO.
  • Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA) experience.
  • Experience with ECAD-MCAD translation.
  • Experience with machined part design.
  • Experience conducting basic structural, thermal, and dynamic analysis with tools such as SOLIDWORKS Simulation, ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP, Nastran, Mathcad, etc.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet tight deadlines in an environment of competing priorities with a degree of autonomy and integrity.
  • Knowledge of PCB layout and design practices and standards.
  • Familiarity with electronics assembly and construction processes and techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Team Management and Leadership: Manage and lead a team of mechanical engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration within the team, with other departments, and with other divisions.
  • Align team objectives with organizational goals and ensure timely delivery of project milestones.
  • Individual Contributions: Prepare design specifications, conduct analyses, and present recommendations for approval.
  • Assess the feasibility of designs within time and cost constraints.
  • Explore solutions for product or process challenges and integrate mechanical design elements for assigned projects.
  • Investigate and modify material, component, and process specifications as needed.
  • Engage in product development activities, such as creating drawing board layouts, and interpreting and implementing customer specifications and documentation requirements.
  • Technical Responsibilities: Manage all aspects of mechanical design for assigned products, including creating 3D models for feasibility and interference detection, and producing 2D working drawings.
  • Analyze designs for suitability in various environments, focusing on thermal, structural, vibration, shock, and fatigue, providing supporting data as needed.
  • Prepare and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing analyses to ensure manufacturability and interchangeability.
  • Interface directly with the product development team to resolve technical issues, ensuring high-quality and dependable products.
  • Ensure engineering drawings accurately reflect design intent and create and implement engineering change notices.
  • Interpret industry and customer standards, preparing materials to support engineering design reviews.
  • Attend and participate in technical interchange and design review meetings with internal teams and customers.
  • Conduct root cause investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide input on new products, processes, standards, and plans, and collaborate with Project Managers on accurate accounting of engineering hours.
  • Support bids and proposals to help L3Harris secure new and follow-on business.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and others within the L3Harris organization.
  • Strong understanding of applicable government and industry standards, including ASME Y14.5 (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and ASME Y14.100 (Engineering Drawing Practices), and its application techniques.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
