Mechanical Engineer Manager

Lam ResearchTualatin, OR

About The Position

As a Mechanical Engineering Manager – New Product Development (NPI) in the WETS Product Group, you will play a critical leadership role in delivering next‑generation wet processing tools from early concept through production release. Your work will directly impact product performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability—enabling Lam to meet customer commitments and maintain technology leadership in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. In this role, you will lead and develop a team of mechanical engineers responsible for designing complex subsystems and assemblies, while partnering closely with Systems, Process, Electrical, Controls, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Program Management. You will balance technical depth with execution rigor, ensuring mechanical designs meet requirements, integrate cleanly at the system level, and are delivered on time through the NPI lifecycle. This is a high‑visibility role where your technical leadership, people development, and execution discipline will materially influence program success and team capability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline with 8+ years of experience, including people or technical leadership roles, or
  • Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong background in mechanical design of complex electro‑mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience leading mechanical design through NPI phase gates.
  • Experience managing engineers and delivering results through cross‑functional teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to prioritize, manage risk, and execute in a high‑accountability environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with semiconductor manufacturing equipment, particularly wet processing or fluid‑intensive systems.
  • Strong understanding of DFMEA, tolerance analysis, thermal‑mechanical design, and reliability engineering.
  • Experience supporting production ramp, sustaining engineering, and field issue resolution.
  • Familiarity with Lam NPI processes, EPLs, and phase‑gate development models.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and building high‑performing technical teams.
  • Exposure to cost modeling, supplier engagement, and global manufacturing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Mechanical NPI Execution
  • Own mechanical deliverables across all NPI phase gates (Pre‑DR, DDR, CDR, FDR), ensuring scope, quality, and schedule commitments are met.
  • Drive strong technical decision‑making, risk management, and trade‑off analysis throughout development.
  • Manage and Develop Engineering Talent
  • Directly manage, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical engineers, fostering technical excellence, accountability, and growth.
  • Set clear goals, provide regular feedback, and support career development aligned with Lam engineering standards.
  • Build team capability in areas such as DFx, tolerance management, reliability, and system integration.
  • Own Mechanical Design Quality and Integration
  • Ensure mechanical designs meet functional, performance, reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and approve mechanical architectures, layouts, drawings, and BOM structures.
  • Partner with Systems Engineering to ensure clean subsystem interfaces, proper margin allocation, and successful system‑level integration.
  • Drive DFx, Cost, and Manufacturability
  • Ensure designs meet DFx objectives including reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, safety, and cost.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain, and Operations to enable smooth transition from development to production.
  • Drive cost reduction, part standardization, and supply‑chain robustness without compromising performance.
  • Cross‑Functional Leadership
  • Collaborate closely with Program Management, Product Management, Systems, Process, Electrical, Controls, and Software teams.
  • Communicate technical status, risks, and mitigation plans clearly to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Influence across disciplines and organizations to drive alignment and execution, often without direct authority.
  • Risk Management and Validation
  • Own or support mechanical FMEAs, risk assessments, and corrective action plans.
  • Ensure appropriate mechanical validation, qualification, and failure analysis are executed and documented.
  • Support system‑level debug, integration, and field issue resolution as required.

Benefits

  • At Lam, our people make amazing things possible. That’s why we invest in you throughout the phases of your life with a comprehensive set of outstanding benefits.
