About The Position

The Manager of Manufacturing Engineering position oversees the improvement, development and implementation of manufacturing processes and magnet machining equipment, to maintain proper product functionality as well as to meet the targets for Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost (Productivity). The Manager of Manufacturing Engineering ensures the manufacturing Engineering team and other manufacturing departments work together cohesively. This position leads and directs the work of assigned manufacturing Engineers and project Engineers.

Requirements

  • BS degree with engineering emphasis required, MS degree in engineering (preferred). 
  • 8+ years of experience working directly with manufacturing processes (build to print and new product development) and successfully leading a Manufacturing Engineering function within a low volume, high mix manufacturing environment.
  • 5+ years of experience leading teams of engineers in a continuous improvement environment. 
  • 2+ years of experience with CNC, Assembly and/or Grinding processes.
  • Communication – Demonstrates clear and succinct communication skills in a variety of communication settings and styles. Must be able to interact and effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization. Can create open channels of communication, adapt message to fit audience, express ideas clearly and concisely, keep others well-informed, listen carefully to input and feedback.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills: use rigorous DMAIC and Lean/6SIGMA methods to solve problems to root cause while deploying appropriate counter measures and containment actions. (i.e. DOE’s, 5WHY’s, Value Stream Mapping, PFMEA, Pareto Charts, etc.)
  • High level of business acumen: Understands policies, practices, technology, trends and information and how those affect the business.
  • Technical Capacity – is a skilled and technically competent engineer – a person whose technical skills are respected and sought out.
  • Project Management – ability to take a problem statement through a rigorous process and closure, adding value to the organization. 
  • Conflict resolution – reads situations quickly, can find common ground and get cooperation with minimum noise. Sees conflict as opportunity. Follows a process to resolve.
  • Quality Expertise – always learning about the profession and continuously keeping abreast of new trends, tools, techniques, regulations and requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • MS degree in engineering (preferred).
  • Black/Green Belt or Lean Certification a plus.
  • Knowledge of magnetic materials and applications in a high mix/low volume manufacturing environment is a plus.
  • Secondary language skills a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Be a safety role model.  Engage with employees, supervision and management to create and promote a safe work environment.  Always work first to engineer safety into our work processes.
  • Apply DMAIC and Lean/6SIGMA tools to identify defects/waste in the manufacturing process and eliminate root cause(s).
  • Manage team to consistently meet and exceed corporate goals by providing training, development and coaching to drive peak performance with direct reports. 
  • Actively engage with Continuous Improvement deploying Lean Tools to improve employee safety, processes and decrease cost. Implement mistake-proofing concepts to prevent product defects.
  • Work closely with Operations, Advanced Technology, Quality Assurance and Maintenance personnel to prevent problems with products, machines, and tooling/fixtures.
  • Lead all new magnet machining technology introductions.
  • Experiment with and analyze different manufacturing processes, design tolerances and other factors in the developmental process.
  • Oversee the  process and operational qualifications in magnet machining and perform tests to determine compliance to specifications and targets. 
  • Analyze and design lean manufacturing cells using effective systems and simulation tools to optimize use of space, equipment, material and personnel.  Assist in developing plant layout in planning rearrangement of facilities, equipment and operations for better utilization of space.
  • Ensure vendors/subcontractors are manufacturing products according to product specifications. Ensure that all manufacturing product specifications are developed, and testing procedures are in place before utilizing vendors/subcontractors.  Provide input and support during the selection process of new vendors.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned or required.
