We’re always searching the globe for innovative, collaborative minds to join our best-in-class Aecon community!    Assistant Manager Machining & Fabrication is responsible for the machining operations, fabrication support, and technical leadership. This role ensures precision manufacturing, process efficiency, quality compliance and successful coordination with Engineering and Facility Management to deliver fully constructible, install-ready products with no impact to facility schedules. The position provides hands-on machining expertise while administering work direction to maintenance personnel and serving as acting leadership support when required.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of machining and manufacturing industry experience.
  • Strong ability to interpret geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Proven experience setting up and operating CNC and manual machines (mills, lathes, grinders, waterjet).
  • Advanced programming knowledge using G‑Code and CAD/CAM software.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, engineering plans, specifications, and machining parameters.
  • Strong knowledge of tooling, inserts, wear characteristics, and cutting applications.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools including micrometers, calipers, gauges, files, and cutting tools.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, raw materials, production workflows, and quality control systems.
  • Experience with waterjet functions and operations.
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and basic Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to lead technical reviews and provide directions to maintenance personnel.
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with Engineering, Facility Management, and operations teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to support schedules, budgets, and compliance requirements in regulated environments.

Responsibilities

  • Plan machining operations by reviewing work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, surface locations, machining parameters, and GD&T requirements.
  • Read, write, edit, and optimize CNC programs using G‑Code and CAD/CAM software based on engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Create and modify programs to improve efficiency, accuracy, and production rates.
  • Set up and operate CNC and manual machines including mills, lathes, grinders, and waterjet equipment to produce parts within specified tolerances.
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, inserts, and materials for each job, considering wear characteristics and application requirements.
  • Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, cutting, turning, facing, knurling, and thread‑chasing operations.
  • Perform machine offsets, speed, and feed adjustments to maintain part quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Inspect and measure finished products using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other inspection tools.
  • Identify and address deviations from quality standards and ensure adherence to quality assurance procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of production runs, inspections, maintenance activities, and corrective actions.
  • Diagnose and resolve machine malfunctions, tooling issues, and process inefficiencies.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, calibration, tool changes, and machine adjustments to ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Sharpen, replace, and manage worn tooling as required.
  • Identify opportunities for machining, programming, and process improvements.
  • Stay current with CNC machining technologies, tooling advancements, and industry trends.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior machinists and operators.
  • Support fabrication efforts including constructability reviews, estimating, troubleshooting, and coordination with Engineering to ensure successful final product installation.
  • Communicate effectively with Facility Management to meet project deadlines, budgets, and quality expectations while maintaining quality compliance
  • Serve as acting leadership support and stand in for upper management as necessary.
