About The Position

The Manager-Laboratory reports directly to the Director of the Laboratory. Plans and organizes staffing and directs functions to ensure the effective operation of the Laboratory and Pathology. Provides general oversight into the technical area of the Laboratory. Responsible for the Quality Assurance processing as well as process improvement. Ensures compliance with all regulatory and accrediting agencies. Assists the Director with fiscal responsibilities of the laboratory to prepare capital and operational budgets for the laboratory. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Five (5) Years of demonstrated competency in one Laboratory specialty as a CLS that the individual directs or has demonstrated competency in supervision or management.
  • Valid State of California license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct supervision and work direction of all technical personnel on all shifts working in Pathology, Microbiology, chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank and Phlebotomy.
  • Provides supervision and direction of Point of Care testing.
  • Evaluates request for bedside testing instrumentation based on medical necessity, cost, and efficiency.
  • Involves key laboratory and non-laboratory personnel in the evaluation process.
  • Monitors and maintains the Laboratory’s Quality Assurance Program and is responsible to implement changes that will improve our quality of service.
  • Interviews, hires, and provides counseling and discipline as needed.
  • Evaluates work performance of all technical staff, POC, and writes annual performance reviews.
  • Proactively resolves employee conflict and/or personnel problems acting as impediments to a high level of departmental morale.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Reviews and approves prepared work schedules.
  • Ensures efficient, competent, and cost-effective staffing on all shifts.
  • Provides adequate training and department orientation for newly hired technical personnel.
  • Evaluates their performance after six months employment.
  • Ensures that all technical personnel are competent in the areas for which they have been trained.
  • Documents annual competency in personnel file.
  • Ensures quality, accuracy, and timeliness in the reporting of all laboratory test results.
  • Promotes the continual improvement of laboratory quality assurance/performance improvement goals.
  • Participates in the hospital QA/CQI processes and is responsible for ensuring that QA reports are completed in a timely manner and distributed to the respective parties.
  • Reviews and maintains quality assurance and quality control performance with associated record keeping.
  • Ensures department participation and inter-laboratory quality control programs.
  • Ensures that consultation is available to the laboratory clients on matters relating to the quality of the test results reported and their interpretation concerning specific patient conditions.
  • Also acts as a liaison between the medical staff and the pathologists.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties and testing as deemed appropriate and when assigned.
  • Actively communicates with pathologists regarding abnormal findings and clinical issues necessitating pathologist review and/or intervention.
  • Ensures compliance of all laboratory accreditation requirements (CAP, JCAHO).
  • Consults with medical staff and other healthcare providers on matters relating to laboratory services and patient care.
  • Maintains good relations with patients, medical staff, and other departments, as well as other hospitals that use our services.
  • Maintains currency in new methodologies and emerging technologies in the field of laboratory science.
  • Evaluates the current and future technical needs of the departments, evaluates instrumentation to meet these needs, negotiates instrument pricing with vendors, and performs financial analysis for implementation.
  • Based on these findings, make recommendations for new instrumentation to the Administrative Director.
  • Provides appropriate levels of employee recognition.
  • Will assume assigned duties of the Director during periods of his/her absence.
