About The Position

As Manager I, Mechanical Engineering, you will lead a small team of mechanical engineers responsible for the design, analysis, and continuous improvement of ASM’s advanced semiconductor equipment. You will own the local mechanical design roadmap, solving complex challenges in heat transfer, motion and vibration, cantilever loading, and fluid and thermal dynamics while driving reliability and yield for our customers. By combining deep technical leadership with strong people management and customer collaboration, you will help translate ASM’s vision and strategy into robust tools and solutions that keep fabs running at the cutting edge.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 12+ years of relevant industry experience; or Master’s degree with 8+ years of experience; or PhD with 4+ years of experience.
  • Proven experience in equipment or complex machinery design, ideally in semiconductor capital equipment or closely related high-tech industries.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing small engineering teams, including setting direction, assigning work, and leading performance and development discussions.
  • Strong technical foundation in heat transfer, structural mechanics (including motion, vibration, and cantilever loads), and fluid and thermal dynamics.
  • Experience leading technical incident investigations and driving corrective and preventive actions through structured RCCA methodologies.
  • Familiarity with defining and applying control limits, and with auditing or improving measurement systems to ensure data quality and repeatability.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (such as process, integration, software, controls, manufacturing, and service) and to build strong partnerships with stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex mechanical and system-level topics clearly in English, both in writing and in person, including to customers when needed.
  • A clear commitment to safety, quality, inclusion, and to building a team culture based on accountability, learning, and mutual respect.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience in mechanical engineering for semiconductor process tools, vacuum systems, robotics, or other advanced capital equipment.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting cross-module yield excursions and working with integration and process teams in a fab or equipment environment.
  • Experience defining site control limits and auditing measurement capability at both customer and internal manufacturing or test sites.
  • Strong background in design of experiments (DOE), data analysis, and statistical tools, including multivariate analysis and PCA, to drive design decisions and problem solving.
  • Experience presenting technical content in customer QBRs or similar executive-level forums and coordinating rapid, cross-functional response actions.
  • Demonstrated track record of fostering innovation, continuous improvement, and a growth mindset within an engineering team.
  • Experience leading teams through organizational or technology changes while maintaining engagement, clarity, and alignment with company strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a small team of mechanical engineers, setting and communicating clear goals, priorities, and expectations that align with ASM’s vision, strategy, and long-term objectives.
  • Own the mechanical design roadmap for the local platform, from concept through validation, ensuring robust equipment designs that meet performance, reliability, safety, and cost targets.
  • Design and analyze critical mechanical subsystems, including heat transfer, motion and vibration, cantilever loads, and fluid/thermal dynamics, using appropriate analytical and simulation tools.
  • Interface closely with robotics, vacuum, and other subsystem teams to deliver integrated equipment solutions that meet system-level requirements.
  • Incorporate customer insights and market trends into mechanical design and platform planning, adapting goals to stay ahead of industry developments.
  • Lead incident investigations on mechanical and cross-module issues, verify corrective actions region-wide, and ensure sustainable closure of technical problems.
  • Troubleshoot cross-module yield excursions in collaboration with integration and process teams, and mentor junior engineers on integration and mechanical risk.
  • Define and maintain site control limits for key mechanical parameters, and audit measurement capability at both customer and internal sites to ensure data quality and consistency.
  • Facilitate structured RCCA (root cause and corrective action) processes, embedding systemic fixes, tracking KPI improvements, and driving a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Design and analyze complex DOEs (design of experiments); apply multivariate analysis and PCA to isolate key factors, optimize designs, and understand interactions across subsystems.
  • Present technical status, risks, and mitigation plans in customer QBRs and other reviews, and coordinate rapid cross-functional response actions when issues arise.
  • Encourage and support the sharing of new ideas, creating a culture where innovation is welcomed, constructive challenge is embraced, and ideas are acted upon.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration, ensuring diverse perspectives are included in decisions that move the organization forward and shape future initiatives.
  • Champion consistent delivery of high-quality work by reinforcing best practices, critical thinking, and risk management, while identifying and driving improvements to team processes.
  • Support the growth and development of team members through regular feedback, coaching, and mentoring, role modeling openness to feedback and continuous self-improvement.
  • Create a culture of learning by encouraging skill development, offering opportunities for growth, and promoting a growth mindset that sees change as an opportunity for innovation.
  • Empower others by delegating responsibility effectively and fostering autonomy in decision-making, while holding the team accountable for meeting commitments and safety standards.
  • Foster an inclusive, positive team culture where people feel valued, respected, and motivated, helping to attract, retain, and inspire top talent.
  • Model resilience and a solution-focused mindset during change, clearly communicating changes and how they align with organizational goals and the One ASM mindset.
  • Drive collaboration across teams and regions to ensure a unified, cross-functional response to organizational and customer-driven changes.
