About The Position

We are looking for a hands-on Manager, Datacenter Engineering to join Platform Engineering organization and own the transformation of our physical infrastructure. Reporting directly to the VP of Platform Engineering, you will manage our North Central Austin colocation environment, transforming our datacenter into a stable, enterprise-grade operation. This is a hybrid role (2–3 days onsite) for a technical leader who thrives on solving hard problems—you won’t just be monitoring dashboards; you will be leading the consolidation of legacy storage (NAS, vSAN) onto new enterprise array and optimizing a diverse fleet of hardware (from VMWare hosts to Mac Pros and Raspberry Pis). We have the new stack ready to go and we need your leadership to architect the deployment. You must be in the greater Austin Area and able to be onsite in our datacenter 2-3 days a week.

Requirements

  • You have a proven track record of walking into complex, unstructured environments and implementing standards, organization, and stability.
  • 10+ years of systems engineering experience with strong hands-on skills in VMWare (vSphere/ESXi), Enterprise Storage, and Networking (Juniper preferred).
  • 5+ years of leadership experience with the ability to be hands on
  • You have a willingness to learn and implement new hypervisors and are comfortable managing non-standard hardware (Mac minis, ARM devices) alongside enterprise servers.
  • Experience managing small teams or leading technical projects; you can delegate effectively but are ready to be "hands-on" in the racks when needed.
  • Hybrid Availability: You reside within a commutable distance (approx. 30-45 mins) of North Central Austin and are willing to be onsite at the colo 2–3 days a week.
  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Networking specialty is not required but it is a bonus
  • Enterprise networking experience in the datacenter or the cloud is not necessary but it is a bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Transformation: Drive the migration to a disciplined environment, collapsing disparate NAS and vSAN storage into our newly acquired enterprise storage and Juniper networking stack.
  • Infrastructure Ownership: Manage the full lifecycle of colocation cage—including rack/stack planning, cabling standards, and power management—ensuring high availability for our internal testing, sales and corporate environments.
  • Diverse Asset Management : Oversee a wide variety of hardware crucial for product testing, including 15-20 VMWare servers, Mac clusters (Intel/M-series), and edge devices like Raspberry Pis.
  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a lean, small team of engineers, fostering a culture of operational discipline while serving as the escalation point for critical physical outages.
  • Capacity & Innovation: Balance stakeholder requests for new environments with system stability, while researching and implementing new hypervisor technologies to diversify our virtualization stack.
  • Vendor Relations: Manage hardware procurement and vendor relationships to ensure our team has the resources needed to support the product roadmap.
  • Other duties as needed
