About The Position

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), with more than 61,000 laboratory, translational, and clinical researchers; population scientists; other health care professionals; and patient advocates residing in 143 countries and territories around the world, is the first and largest organization in the world dedicated to advances in all areas of high-quality, innovative cancer research. Its mission is to prevent and cure all cancers. The programs and activities of the AACR foster the exchange of new knowledge among scientists and physicians in cancer research as well as in related sciences. The AACR publishes ten peer-reviewed scientific journals and an award-winning magazine for cancer patients and their loved ones; convenes topical scientific conferences and an annual meeting that draws more than 22,500 participants; offers educational workshops that train young investigators in a variety of scientific and clinical areas; funds research fellowships, career development awards, and research grants for both senior and junior investigators; raises public awareness of the progress in the biology, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer; engages actively in advocacy for increased federal research funding and other national policies that accelerate progress against cancer; and interacts with regulatory agencies to support regulatory science and policy. The Enterprise Platform Services and Data Management Team oversees the software and processes that facilitate the connection and collaboration of the organization’s more than 61,000 members at the forefront of cancer research. We manage the enterprise Customer Relationship Management (eCRM) solution along with its related systems and customizations that support our Membership, Event Registration, and other business processes. In addition, we are standing up the organization’s Master Data Management (MDM) solution, as well as its enterprise Data Warehouse (DW). Our group is also responsible for the AACR IT Help Desk and is in the process of building out a more robust customer service offering, for internal and external constituents. The Manager, Data Analytics is primarily responsible for empowering users with data across the institution, providing a unique blend of business, technical, and analytical expertise. The team combines business knowledge with data and technology to empower decision-makers and believes that user-friendly, self-service, embedded analytics products can improve stakeholder experience, optimize processes, and provide valuable information to decision makers. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Data Management, this role oversees the Data Analytics Team, supporting the AACR Central platform by delivering data insights aligned with Master Data Management (MDM), Data Warehouse (Snowflake), and enterprise integration initiatives.

Requirements

  • Ability to extrapolate from ambiguous and/or limited information to produce requirements that can be verified with stakeholders to confirm their needs/asks
  • Excellent proficiency in English communication (written and verbal) is required
  • Effective problem solving and troubleshooting ability required
  • Creation of visually appealing and intuitive reporting interfaces
  • Models systems and data to a logical level, user interface design, and prototyping, decision tables/trees, data flows, wireframing of reports
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to cross-functional data initiatives in alignment with MDM and data governance best practices.
  • Ability to organize work, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines required

  • At least two years working in analytics/business intelligence
  • Extensive experience in data visualization tools (Qlik, Tableau, Power BI, etc)
  • Knowledge of relational database structures
  • Microsoft office suite proficiency
  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Data Science experience developing forecasts, predictive models, and a strong understanding of statistics preferred
  • Experience in at least one computer programming language or analytical programming language (R, Python, SAS, etc) preferred
  • Familiarity with Master Data Management (MDM) principles and Snowflake as an enterprise Data Warehouse is preferred.
  • Experience with Salesforce Platform is preferred
  • Knowledge/Experience with Scrum/Agile methodologies is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Administration of Power BI
  • Ensuring that users of Power BI across the enterprise are assigned licenses, and managing licensing needs
  • Creating and maintaining a framework for an Analytics Center of Excellence
  • Manage and automate report delivery and help triage the importance of reports that need to be created
  • Oversee Data Analytics Team
  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of data analysts, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and provide training opportunities to enhance team skills.
  • Stakeholder Liaison
  • Work in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to capture requirements and business rules
  • Serve as the conduit between the customer community (internal and external customers) and the development team through which requirements flow
  • Proactively communicate and collaborate with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements
  • Coordinate and conduct user acceptance testing for new system implementations and software patch releases
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Data Management to ensure reporting initiatives align with platform-wide data strategy and AACR Central governance efforts.
  • Report Creation and Maintenance
  • Propose and create innovative and appropriate data solutions (dashboards, reports, business intelligence tools, etc) for the measurement of processes and outcomes
  • Work closely with the Data Analytics team to maintain and improve existing reports
  • Proactively communicate and collaborate with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements
  • Develop “end-to-end” technical architecture to include data input solutions, data governance process, and the analysis-presentation of complex data, with an emphasis on integration across Snowflake, Salesforce, and other enterprise data systems
  • Collaborate with developers and subject matter experts to establish the technical vision and analyze tradeoffs between usability and performance needs
  • Create a reporting environment for users at all levels of the organization that integrates with AACR Central’s MDM, Data Warehouse, and governed enterprise data sources
  • Documentation
  • Create requirements specifications according to defined standards, using natural language, especially focused on the Analytics Center of Excellence
  • Produce detailed universally understood procedures for permanent records and for use in training
  • Track and fully document changes for functional and business specifications
  • Obtain stakeholder sign-off for documented deliverables
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date technical, functional, and process documentation. Ensure all documentation aligns with AACR’s Master Data Management (MDM) architecture and supports consistent use of enterprise data definitions.   • Training and Professional Development
  • Conduct assigned project activities in alignment with project timelines and budget
  • Proactively seek out new technologies as they arise across the industry and work to implement them at the AACR as appropriate
  • Create a training program for new users of Power BI and conduct regular trainings
  • Work with internal stakeholders to support and implement solutions according to their requirements, including utilizing new tools, such as AI
  • Continually interact with team members on ways to improve new and existing reporting, including usability and visual appeal
  • Identify issues and risks, ensuring that they are appropriately raised and actioned
  • Participate in implementation and provide post-implementation support of projects
