About The Position

GENERAL OVERVIEW: This job is responsible for developing and achieving clinical service goals for the Department of Pharmacy while maintaining a clinical practice; directs, coordinates, monitors, and documents clinical services provided by the clinical specialists and drug information Pharmacist, coordinating support for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee in close collaboration with pharmacy management, and contributes to the cost containment efforts as related to the rational use of medications; integrates clinical services with department operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum Completion of a pharmacy residency program.
  • For current staff, 5-7 years demonstrated clinical pharmacy experience in lieu of completion of pharmacy residency program
  • 3 years progressive hospital experience with emphasis on clinical pharmacy practice and drug use policy
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics, and pharmacokinetics, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee activities
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Registered Pharmacist in the state of PA at hire or sit for boards and obtain licensure within 120 days.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, implements, and controls the clinical pharmacy activities in the Hospital Pharmacy.
  • Monitors clinical activities to keep informed and to ensure that professional and hospital standards and objectives are being met.
  • Formulates long range plans for clinical pharmacy practice and operations.
  • Sets goals and develops strategies for meeting these goals.
  • Anticipates possible problems and prepares contingent strategies.
  • Directs the clinical activities of associates.
  • Monitors associates' performance and clarifies work expectations with regard to the age specific populations.
  • Motivates associates and promotes cooperation among individuals and groups.
  • Supervises staff, evaluates work, and recommends and implements approved disciplinary action.
  • Develops and implements processes through orientation, training and education to ensure that the competence of all staff members is assessed, maintained, improved and demonstrated throughout their employment.
  • Assists in the development of an annual budget.
  • Authorizes routine expenditures and monitors budget and other financial indicators during the year.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of plans to control costs and improve department operations.
  • Maintains a clinical practice and conducts direct patient care activities by reviewing and evaluating patients' drug/medical history to make recommendations that optimize drug therapy.
  • Directs drug use evaluation (DUE), adverse drug reaction (ADR), and drug defect reporting and drug information services.
  • Assists Director of Pharmacy to develop and maintain quality assessment and quality improvement programs to determine the level of and improve the quality of service provided.
  • Investigates and studies trends and developments in the clinical pharmacy practice.
  • Develops policies, procedures and operation manuals and introduces new products and procedures to staff.
  • Assists in determining the specifications for the purchase of all pharmaceuticals within the hospital.
  • Assists the Director of Pharmacy in conducting pharmacy education activities including training for pharmacy students and residents, new and current associates, medical staff and patients.
