About The Position

UPMC East Hospital in Monroeville is searching for a Manager to oversee our Central Sterile Processing Unit! This full-time, salaried position will work primarily daylight hours, Monday-Friday. UPMC East is considered a community hospital, but one of the fastest growing facilities within UPMC. In East's Central Sterile department, we have a team of many enthusiastic employees who are eager to get their certification and advance in the department. If you have at least 5 years in sterile processing/surgical technology, 3 years of leadership experience and an Associate's Degree in Nursing, Business or a related field, we invite you to join our incredible team! The Manager of Central Sterile Processing is responsible for all medical/surgical sterile and supply related functions. The responsibility entails operations and quality of service provided, employee development, operating and capital budget accountability and short/long-term planning.

Requirements

Associate degree in nursing, Business, or related field.
5 years of experience in Central Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology.
3 years supervisory or team lead experience required.
Ability to communicate effectively with peers, physicians, staff of other hospital departments, and outside contacts.
Must have a Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician provisional certification and pass the certification exam prior to moving into the role.
Must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.
Must be able to stand for all shift hours and be able to pick up, push, pull etc. 35 pounds.

Responsibilities

Act in a manner to promote optimal service management.
Recommend intra-departmental and department policies and procedures or operations in the Surgical Central Processing Department.
Ensure that all personnel are aware of hospital policies and procedures; enact disciplinary procedures when appropriate.
Implement and maintain accurate position descriptions and performance standards for all subordinates, review job performance of each subordinate on an annual or as required basis and make recommendations to Director concerning potential merit increments.
Serve on all committees as appointed by the Director.
Report to the Director, Surgical Services regarding departmental activities and operational performance.
Develop and monitor operating and capital budgets in all areas of responsibility; prepare monthly budget variance reports for Director which examine budgeted versus actual expenditures.
Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication. Coaches colleagues on cultural diversity and addresses workplace horizontal violence and impairment. Demonstrates accountability to self and others for safe work hours, time management and healthy lifestyles.
Ensure that accurate quota levels are maintained in the Surgical Central Processing functions to ensure proper issuances to all user groups; interact on a regular basis with all user group representatives to ensure that service levels are acceptable.
Comply with attendance policies as established by the UPMC Surgical Central Processing Department
Implement and interpret monthly activity data for all Surgical Central Processing functions and supply areas; data should highlight departmental performance, pinpoint problems, develop alternatives, and advise on significant trends.
Select, evaluate, develop, motivate, and counsel subordinates.
Demonstrates interest in the development of others and positively impacts the lives of patients/families, peers, and members of the healthcare team through mentoring, education, and knowledge sharing. Seeks opportunities to share expertise with other members of the healthcare team within and beyond the clinical unit/department.
In conjunction with the Purchasing Department, develop and monitor all Surgical Central Processing equipment buying/renting issues. Assumes shared responsibility and coordination of all ordering of instrumentation in collaboration with the Operating Room, updating of all count sheets within the instrument tracking system, ensures that instrumentation sets missing critical components are returned to circulation in a timely fashion. Serves as a resource for the instrument tracking system. Assists in the coordination of streamlining and consolidation of instrumentation sets to improve the throughout performance of Sterile Reprocessing.

Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques. Continuously improves the quality of care and the work environment of outcomes and the integration of research and best practices into daily work. Shares learning from improvements with other units and/or spreads across the business unit or system. Remains highly accessible and visible for proactive troubleshooting and problem solving across the OR and Sterile Processing Department. Assists in the reduction rate of surgical instrument errors and institutes a streamlined same-day turnaround for instrument processing. Collaborates with senior department leaders on this initiative where appropriate.
Serve as the Surgical Central Processing representative to the hospital user groups for all operations and related issues, including purchasing issues and financial issues to ensure proper levels of service satisfaction.
Independently run the department on off-shifts and weekends or in the absence of the director. Develops management skills through completion of UPMC DRIVE course and one additional management seminar
