Role Overview The Manager of Animal Safety & Welfare will own the implementation, evolution, and operationalization of Netflix’s Animal Safety & Welfare Guidelines and related tools across productions, internal teams, and global regions. This role will serve as the central point of authority between creative teams, production management, labor, legal, safety, comms, and external animal welfare organizations to enable informed and consistent decision making for the ethical, safe, and compliant use of animals in all Netflix productions. This role blends policy development, cross-functional enablement, vendor ecosystem management, and production-facing consultation, with a strong emphasis on continuous improvement, documentation, and global scalability.

Requirements

  • 6–8+ years of experience in physical production, production operation, safety, compliance, or studio policy implementation.
  • Strong understanding of film/TV production workflows.
  • Experience with safety, compliance, animal welfare, or labor-related policy.
  • Experience working with global production teams.
  • Demonstrated experience translating policy into real-world operational workflows.
  • Exceptional cross-functional communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong documentation, process design, and change-management experience.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and evolving frameworks.
  • Ability to present complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, optimize, and continuously improve the Netflix UCAN Animal Safety & Welfare Guidelines and associated tools, including:
  • Production documentation
  • Internal Airtable Intake Form
  • Animal Vendor List
  • N-Chat AI Assistant
  • Process flowcharts
  • Track feedback from internal teams and external productions to inform updates, refinements, and future iterations (e.g., “Global Animal Guidelines”).
  • Identify areas where additional clarity, new documentation, or expanded guidance is needed based on real-world use cases and scenarios.
  • Lead investigation and work in collaboration with cross functionals on internal and external communications
  • Lead the integration of animal use data into Slate Manager.
  • Conduct roadshow-style presentations to internal teams (Production, Creative, Labor, Safety, Risk Management, Logistics etc.) to introduce the overall Animal Guidance, gather feedback, and drive adoption.
  • Facilitate deep-dive working sessions with internal stakeholders to integrate animal safety considerations into workflows across production types, formats, and verticals.
  • Identify required internal stakeholders for various animal-use scenarios (e.g., unscripted hunting, wildlife footage, specialty animal action, Netflix Live events) and design clear approval and escalation workflows.
  • Expand the Animal Vendor List by reviewing historical agreements and identifying recently used partners.
  • Consult with productions on intended animal action and provide guidance on best practices, alternatives, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Build and maintain a library of case studies demonstrating safe and effective approaches to animal-related action (e.g., green screen use, animatronics, puppetry, VFX alternatives, controlled live animal work).
  • Continuously document internal and external animal-related questions, challenges, and resolutions to build a robust institutional knowledge base.
  • Gather feedback from productions about their experiences with trainers, wranglers, and consultants.
  • Ensure learnings from past productions are memorialized and fed back into guidance and tools.
  • Initiate discussions with regional Production Management teams to understand:
  • Local regulations
  • Cultural nuances
  • Available resources
  • Common use cases
  • Support the long-term development of globally scalable Animal Safety & Welfare Guidelines with regional team input.
  • Ensure that Netflix’s approach to animal safety and welfare consistently aligns with our brand values and public-facing commitments.
  • Anticipate and mitigate reputational, ethical, and operational risks associated with animal use across a growing slate of global productions.
  • Develop scalable frameworks that support consistent decision-making across regions, formats, and production types.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to address potential issues before they become public or operational concerns.
