The Lead Mammography Technologist is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the mammography department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality diagnostic breast imaging services. In addition to performing mammographic procedures, this role provides leadership, technical guidance, staff training, and regulatory compliance oversight. The Lead Technologist acts as a liaison between staff, radiologists, and management to support clinical excellence, patient satisfaction, and departmental goals. Job Duties Onboarding and training of new hires Cross-training assistance for cross-training techs- mentorship and tracking Perform screening and diagnostic mammography examinations in compliance with ACR, MQSA, and facility protocols. Position patients accurately and ensure proper breast compression to obtain optimal imaging results while ensuring patient comfort and dignity. Select appropriate exposure parameters for optimal image quality while minimizing patient radiation dose using the ALARA Principal. Operate and maintain mammography equipment and image processing systems. Monitor image quality and ensure proper documentation and labeling of images. Verify patient identity and medical history and explain procedures clearly to ensure patient understanding. Maintain accurate patient records and assist with scheduling follow-up appointments as necessary. Practice radiation safety and infection control standards at all times. Assist radiologists in special procedures, including breast ultrasound, biopsies, or localization as needed. Participate in quality assurance and equipment maintenance programs. Maintain continuing education and certification requirements in compliance with state and federal regulations. Participate in community outreach programs, educational seminars, or breast cancer awareness campaigns to promote early detection, screening participation, and breast health awareness within the community. Provide hands-on training and mentorship to students during clinical rotations, ensuring competency in imaging procedures, safety protocols, and patient care standards while fostering professionalism, confidence, and skill development. Leadership and Supervisory Duties Coordinate daily workflow and technologist assignments to ensure efficiency and coverage. Monitor staff performance and provide ongoing training and mentoring. Ensure compliance with MQSA, ACR, FDA, and state regulations, including documentation and quality control. Conduct regular quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) testing on mammography equipment. Assist in the development and implementation of departmental protocols and policies. Coordinate scheduling and coverage for routine and emergency imaging services. Participate in patient satisfaction and service quality initiatives. Maintain inventory of supplies and ensure proper function of imaging equipment.
