About The Position

The Maintenance Worker 1/2 performs a wide variety of entry-level building maintenance and ground maintenance including: mowing both rough and finished lawn; horticulture, weed control, and tree pruning; construction, small through large-sized equipment operation, and may train on some heavy construction equipment; tank cleaning and industrial painting as related to the regional wastewater treatment facilities; works at various Wastewater Division locations independently and within a team setting. This position requires working in confined spaces and coming in contact with raw sewage on a frequent basis.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in public works maintenance, construction, groundskeeping, or repair work.
  • A valid Oregon driver's license or, the ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard.
  • Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).
  • Ability to obtain an Oregon Class A Commercial Driver's License within the probationary period. City of Eugene will provide onsite training to obtain Class A CDL.
  • Public Pesticide Applicators License, or the ability to obtain within one year of hire date. City of Eugene will provide training.
  • Types and uses of tools and light equipment used in maintenance, repair, and/or construction work.
  • Standard safety precautions and ability to identify hazards.
  • Public works maintenance, repair and construction work in area of assignment.

  • Perform strenuous physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and frequently in confined spaces and uncomfortable conditions, which may include direct contact with raw sewage and heavy lifting.
  • Learn new tasks and equipment operations as required.
  • Work independently or as part of a crew.
  • Identify hazards.
  • Provide and wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Assign, lead, train and review the work of seasonal employees.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with City employees and the public and establish effective working relationships.
  • Be available and respond for emergency call-back as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Operates light and medium and large-sized construction equipment such as small tractor loaders, 10+-yard dump trucks, aerial lifts, crane, concrete saw, portable pumps, and other equipment as assigned.
  • Performs rough mowing using tractor and flail; finished mowing using large riding finish mowers.
  • Performs minor building maintenance duties such as: minor plumbing, wall, and door repair; painting of industrial equipment, rooms, and floors.
  • Performs minor concrete repair and may assist with large-scale concrete projects which include forming, pouring, and finishing.
  • Performs horticulture duties that include maintenance and planting of bedding areas, flowers, shrubs, bulbs, roses, and trees.
  • Performs plant selection, design, and pruning of shrubs and trees. Performs irrigation repair to facilities irrigation systems.
  • Performs work in various types of confined spaces.
  • Perform utility locates.
  • Performs various tank cleaning throughout the wastewater facilities that includes grit chambers, primary and secondary clarifiers, and contact chambers.
  • Performs general maintenance of construction equipment, hand, and power tools; identifies needed repairs and preventive maintenance of vehicles and large equipment.
  • Works in and around raw sewage.
  • Maintains daily work records as required.
  • Performs minor carpentry and other related tasks.
  • May require shift and/or weekend work.
