About The Position

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, clean, and fully functional operation of YMCA facilities, with a primary emphasis on fitness equipment maintenance, repair, and preventative care. This position performs a wide range of general maintenance and repair tasks and is expected to quickly develop specialized expertise in the inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and certification of fitness equipment across all brands used by the YMCA. This role is well-suited for a motivated entry-level technician with general maintenance knowledge who can learn quickly, follow manufacturer standards, and grow into a senior maintenance or facilities leadership role over time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on all YMCA fitness equipment.
  • Maintain and obtain required manufacturer certifications for all fitness equipment brands used by the YMCA.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues related to cardio and strength equipment.
  • Coordinate ordering and replacement of parts, and maintain service documentation and maintenance logs.
  • Ensure equipment meets manufacturer standards, safety guidelines, and YMCA operational expectations.
  • Respond promptly to equipment issues to minimize downtime and member disruption.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repair work including, but not limited to: Minor electrical and plumbing repairs Carpentry and hardware repairs Painting, patching, and general building upkeep
  • Conduct preventative maintenance rounds to identify and address issues before failure.
  • Assist with equipment moves, room resets, and facility setup as needed.
  • Support cleanliness and safety standards across all assigned locations.
  • Provide occasional evening, weekend, and on-call emergency response as required.
  • Communicate maintenance needs, safety concerns, and repair timelines clearly with leadership and staff.
  • Work independently while coordinating with operations and program teams.
  • Maintain positive relationships with members, program participants, staff, and contractors consistent with the YMCA Mission.
  • Performs facility walkthrough as part of daily safety inspection, noting any items needed for corrective action and performs those actions.
  • Ensures repairs are completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintains facilities and grounds in a safe, clean, and organized manner.
  • Minimizes breakdowns through quick response to problems and preventative maintenance programs of all equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance of systems per written guidelines from the manufacturer.
  • Proficient and comfortable with software programs.
  • Troubleshot potential safety and mechanical problems.
  • Ensures the proper use and storage of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures that all legal and code requirements are met.
  • Provides training for staff and volunteers outside of the maintenance department as needed for safety and productivity.
  • Adheres to the YMCA dress code when working.
  • Enforces YMCA rules and policies in a polite and positive manner.
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as assigned.
  • Keeps all certifications current.
  • Maintains an up-to-date time card and reports in writing any issues to the supervisor immediately.
  • Reports any problems to the immediate supervisor.
