About The Position

This is an individual contributor position responsible for performing most functions of the preventive and repair maintenance, electrical, electronic and mechanical work for the Coatings Division with proficiency. The Maintenance Technician 1 is also responsible for fabrication of fixtures using welding, cutting and brazing. Additional duties include identifying and adding new and efficient preventive maintenance tasks and working safely with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Incumbent must adhere to Valmont safety training policies. The Maintenance Technician 1 performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and facilities with a learned level of proficiency. This person is also responsible for maintaining and repairing plant equipment, including pneumatic and mechanical systems, clutches, brakes, power transmission components, combustion engines, and electrical and hydraulic systems. The incumbent performs basic electrical work and fabricates fixtures with limited to no instruction.

Requirements

  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Communicate problems or needs to departmental supervision

  • Pay attention to detail and follow work instructions
  • High awareness for safety with the ability to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and work in a non-temperature controlled environment, as well as with exposure to outdoors
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to be company trained and authorized to operate powered industrial trucks, aerial platforms and bridge cranes in arc flash safety, confined space entry, hazardous energy control and fall protection
  • Ability to spend 75% of workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbing
  • Climb and work from ladders, aerial platforms , bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feet
  • Must be able to distinguish colors
  • The ability to work one (1) to two (2) shifts of overtime per week, as needed
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
  • Educational Background Requires adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of whole numbers and fractions to perform calculations and conversions to and from metric and English measurement standards.
  • Must possess adequate communication and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with other employees.
  • Must display an aptitude for problem solving and the ability to plan for potential problems or needs.
  • Maintenance Technician 1 must demonstrate a minimum acceptable level of equipment specific knowledge within 12 months of on the job experience.
  • Must be able to make decisions whether or not equipment can run safely or needs immediate attention for repairs.
  • The Maintenance Technician 1 should be able to make recommendations to supervision and prioritize necessary repairs.
  • Service manuals establish standard procedures for some decision making.
  • Troubleshooting of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical equipment may require independent judgment at the work site or at additional Valmont sites requesting maintenance assistance.
  • Must be able to work in high stress situations under adverse conditions for long period of time using intense mental and visual concentration.
  • Good hand to eye coordination with a good sense of depth perception at all times.
  • Must be able to distinguish colors.
  • Requires methodical and analytical thought processes to follow complicated diagrams.
  • Responsible for the preventive maintenance and care for hand tools, electrical tools, AC/DC welders, and a computerized maintenance database.
  • Must exhibit considerable care and attention towards equipment and parts.
  • Must follow proper maintenance procedures in order to prevent improper installation of parts.
  • Must use considerable care and attention to equipment soparts are not lost or damaged.
  • Alert workmanship and caution can prevent injuries, such as broken fingers, arms, legs and / or crushed limbs.
  • Responsible for other personnel assisting on the job.
  • Each employee is responsible for learning and applying all provided safety training as outlined by the company and department safety representative and / or supervisor.
  • Keeping safety in the forefront in the daily performance of job duties includes personal safety, safety of others in the department and safekeeping of all company resources.
  • As a Maintenance Technician 1, the incumbent must complete Lock Out-Tag Out training.
  • Actively participates in department safety; demonstrates excellent safety practices and behaviors and conforms to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Actively pursuing an Associate’s or Technical degree in Industrial Maintenance or related field
  • The ability to interpret and fabricate components based on basic blueprints or specification sheets
  • One year of experience with basic troubleshooting pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • One year of experience basic welding/fabricating metal structures/components
  • Climb and work from ladders, man lifts, bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feet
  • Work in adverse conditions: wet, hot, dusty, dirty or cold
  • Industrial boiler certification
  • Structural welding certification
  • Pipe welding certification

Responsibilities

  • Test, inspect, repair, troubleshoot and re-assemble basic plant equipment, components, and systems including but not limited to overhead bridge cranes, hoists, gear boxes, forklifts, straddle trucks, pneumatic and mechanical systems, power transmission components, combustion engines, boiler systems, and electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Perform basic electrical work, and assist in highly skilled electrical work
  • Fabricate fixtures using welding, cutting, brazing, and surface hardening applications
  • Communicate with supervisor and other maintenance and production team members via e-mail, phone, and face-to-face
  • Responsible for working with small hand tools including tape measures, micrometers, saws, drills, riveters, and nail guns and maintaining tools and equipment
  • Ability to fabricate and repair metal structures and components
  • Operate gauging equipment including tape measures, micrometers, and dial calipers
  • Knowledgeable with plant equipment
  • Knowledgeable with basic testing, troubleshooting, disassembly, inspecting, precise measuring, repair and re-assembly of all plant equipment and components with limited instruction
  • Identify and report equipment abnormalities and safety hazards
  • Must be company tested and authorized to operate a forklift
  • Assist in general plant clean up and housekeeping
