About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor 2 (Motor Equipment), the Maintenance Supervisor 1 (Motor Equipment) directs, assigns, and reviews the activities of journey-level mechanics and helpers engaged in the maintenance, repair, collision repair and overhaul of vehicles and maintenance equipment within the Division; oversees and maintains the use and care of the Division tool complement; ensures conformance with safety standards; supervises auxiliary services such as auto body repair, painting, and welding; serves as liaison with manufacturers concerning problems with products. Other duties include, but are not limited to: Supervises a force of journey-level mechanics and other skilled and semi-skilled maintenance workers engages in the repair, maintenance, overhaul, and emission testing of all vehicles and motorized construction and maintenance equipment assigned to the Division. This includes trucks, State Police vehicles, passenger cars, tractors, graders, cranes, rollers, rotary plows compressors, tugboats, barges, and work boats. Assists the Maintenance Supervisor 2 (Motor Equipment) in the inspection of vehicles sent to the shop for repairs; assigns work to subordinate staff. Provides immediate supervision to mechanics engaged in complicated and difficult repair and overhaul jobs. Inspects work in progress and completed work. Visits Section Garages frequently to provide technical expertise and advice to Section Mechanics and supervisors; conducts Section inspections. Ensures adherence to on-the-job safety standards; interprets and uses MSDS and Hazardous Materials Information. Prepares necessary paperwork such as Work Orders on accident reports. Inspects and road tests new and rented vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with contract specifications; maintains vendor and manufacturer representative contract. Schedules vehicles in accordance with the provisions of the Authority's Scheduled Maintenance Program; sidelines vehicles requiring attention; supervises the State Inspection of 270 vehicles annually. Confers with the Maintenance Supervisor 2 (Motor Equipment) on tool and replacement needs; purchase of manuals, extensive repair procedures, and expensive parts. Provides technical assistance to Storeroom personnel in matters of parts identification; procures parts for a varied fleet of vehicles; provides supervisors with information on purchases for stock, on vehicles, and on other purchases. Enforces all fire and safety and work rules, Hazardous Materials, and OSHA rules and regulations; provides on-site correction and training on rules, regulations, and all shop repair and work related activities. May assume the duties and responsibilities of the Maintenance Supervisor 2 (Motor Equipment) when needed.

Requirements

  • TRANSFER QUALIFICATIONS FOR CURRENT STATE EMPLOYEES: Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the NYS Civil Service Law.
  • PROVISIONAL PENDING EXAMINATION QUALIFICATIONS: Current New York State Thruway Authority employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Motor Equipment Mechanic, or Construction Equipment Mechanic.
  • Candidates interested in provisional appointment will be required to take the New York State Department of Civil Service exam for this position.
  • NCP QUALIFICATIONS: Current New York State Thruway Authority employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Motor Equipment Mechanic, or Construction Equipment Mechanic.
  • GENERAL PUBLIC AND/OR NY HELPS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience supervising staff engaged in the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of gasoline and/or diesel-powered motor equipment, including passenger vehicles, construction and heavy equipment, freight and other commercial cargo vehicles, self-propelled off-road equipment, and non-self-propelled motor equipment.
