About The Position

The Maintenance Splice Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and restoring fiber optic network infrastructure to ensure reliable service delivery. This role focuses on identifying and repairing network faults, responding to service outages, and performing high-quality fiber splicing in both scheduled maintenance and emergency situations. The technician works across aerial and underground systems, utilizing technical expertise and testing equipment to quickly isolate issues and minimize downtime. This position requires a strong understanding of fiber optic systems, splicing techniques, and network diagnostics, along with the ability to work efficiently in time-sensitive and high-pressure environments. The Maintenance Splice Technician is expected to participate in overtime, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overnight travel as needed, to support outage response and maintain network continuity. A commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and accurate documentation is essential to success in this role.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for US Employment without sponsorship
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred
  • A valid California driver's license, subject to successful verification through a DMV check, is mandatory
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience splicing fiber optic cables, with demonstrated ability to produce high-quality, reliable splices in both maintenance and repair environments required
  • Prior experience in the telecommunications industry required
  • Proficiency in fusion splicing techniques for both loose tube and ribbon fiber, including mid-sheath access and splicing required
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic testing equipment, including OTDRs and power meters, with the ability to interpret results for troubleshooting and restoration required
  • Experience with fiber optic splice closures (FOSC)/Tyco and proper enclosure preparation and management required
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime, and travel overnight as needed to support emergency response, outage restoration, and urgent maintenance for 24/7 operations
  • The ability to effectively communicate in English, including speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension, as necessary for effective job performance and workplace communication
  • Proficient use of MS Office applications including Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; teleconferencing applications
  • Functional use of common office equipment, computers, and office software

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Fujikura, 70R, 90R, 41S and 45S preferred
  • Familiarity with Exfo OTDR iOLM programs preferred
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred, training will be provided if needed
  • Experience with troubleshooting and the ability to quickly identify and resolve network faults during outages
  • Proficiency in Spanish Language desirable

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fiber optic networks, including identifying faults, isolating issues, and restoring service during outages
  • Conduct emergency fiber cuts, ring cuts, and cable replacements to minimize downtime and ensure rapid service restoration
  • Execute fiber splicing for both ribbon and loose tube fiber in maintenance and outage scenarios, including high fiber count cables
  • Read and interpret splice diagrams, network maps, and fiber color codes to accurately diagnose and resolve network issues
  • Install, repair, and maintain splice closures, fiber termination points (FTPs), and network cabinets
  • Perform fiber terminations, tie-ins, and reconnections to restore network integrity
  • Conduct testing (OTDR, light level, continuity) to verify repairs and ensure network performance meets standards
  • Locate and repair cable faults in aerial and underground plant while minimizing service disruption
  • Respond to scheduled and unscheduled outages, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Be available for emergency response and overtime work
  • Work under time-sensitive conditions to restore service quickly and safely
  • Coordinate with OSP, NOC, and construction teams to prioritize and resolve outages efficiently
  • Ensure all maintenance and repair work meets company standards, engineering specifications, and safety requirements
  • Verify proper cable terminations, splicing quality, and signal performance following repairs
  • Perform end-to-end testing to confirm service restoration and network reliability
  • Maintain accurate slack storage, splice case construction, and cable organization
  • Document all maintenance and outage activities, including splicing records, test results, and repair details
  • Update maps, prints, and system records to reflect network changes and repairs
  • Complete required reports, time tracking, and production documentation accurately and on time
  • Capture site photos and maintain clear records of work performed
  • Climbs poles up to 40 feet and operates in bucket trucks with 32’ plus ladders
  • Manages deployment and removal of traffic control devices to ensure safety in work areas on streets or roadways
  • Adheres to and operates within the weight capacity limits specified by manufacturers for equipment and machinery: o Bucket Truck: 350-pound manufacturers maximum load capacity o Ladders: 300-pound manufacturers maximum load capacity
  • Maintains vehicle/equipment pre-op/post-op to be prepared to perform required duties
  • Maintains a clean driving record as defined by the current fleet insurance underwriter
  • Spends a significant portion of the workday traveling in a vehicle visiting various locations and spending time both indoors and outdoors including businesses and/or residents depending on the nature of the job
  • Overtime, nights, and weekends may be required
  • Adheres to safety protocols and guidelines outlined in the Race employee handbook and job description to promote a safe work environment
  • Additional duties as required.
