About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Positions perform skilled work in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of buildings and facilities. Work requires specialization in two or more technical trades in connection with maintenance of facilities, related equipment and machinery. Positions function at the journey level in multiple skilled trades such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating and air, or similar specializations. Work assignments are complex, and require planning and coordination of multiple trade disciplines. Positions function with limited oversight, and seek input from higher level trades specialists in the completion of novel maintenance problems and issues. Work is performed independently; however, positions may refer unusual work problems to their supervisor for consideration and final determination. Positions provide technical guidance to other positions engaged skilled, semiskilled or unskilled maintenance work. Positions ensure that work performed adheres to established maintenance, repair and/or construction standards.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
  • Skill in the use of tools required in various technically complex trades.
  • Ability to understand and work from sketches or penciled drawings.
  • Ability to operate the more common types of machine shop or woodworking power equipment.
  • Ability to guide the work of skilled workers.
  • Ability to read and interpret building codes.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
