About The Position

This position is assigned to the Piedmont Region Maintenance Yard and is located in Asheboro, NC. The primary purpose of this position is to perform routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance tasks, and repairs, ensuring that assigned systems within adult correction facilities and support buildings are maintained in a safe and efficient manner. This position is required to perform at the Journeyman Level in the General Construction/Carpentry Trades, and proficient at the Journeyman Level in at least one other trade such as, Fabrication and Welding, HVAC, Plumbing or Electrical. This position will be required to perform general construction tasks such as Metal Stud Framing, Drywall Installation and Finishing, Hollow Metal Component Installation, Finish Hardware Installation, Concrete Forming and Finishing, Flooring Renovations, Roofing Renovations, Vinyl Siding Installation, Suspended Ceiling Installation, Painting, and some Masonry. This position may also be required to perform routine preventive maintenance on HVAC Systems, perform Electrical repairs to lighting and building wiring, Plumbing repairs to potable and wastewater drainage systems. This position does require supervising of a semi-skilled and unskilled inmate labor work force to assist with the completion of tasks. Must have a valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain an NC Driver’s License within 30 days of hire. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result. About the NC Dept. of Adult Correction (DAC): The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance and Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs and Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation and Reentry. The Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) serves as the NCDAC Capital Project Coordinator (CPC) and is tasked with coordinating all capital improvement, new construction, renovation, and repair projects with the State Construction Office (SCO). DECM also acts as the DAC representative on matters involving the State Property Office and State Building Commission. Our unified purpose is to provide architectural and engineering support, sustainability, efficiency, and resiliency planning, as well as construction and maintenance services. This ensures that all statewide Institutions and Facilities comply with building codes, regulations, and legislative mandates while promoting the agency’s rehabilitation and reentry goals through offender job training in the construction and maintenance trades. We support the Institutions and Facilities directly and indirectly by installing and maintaining kitchen, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and electronics equipment. The DECM-Engineering team consists of experts in architectural and engineering design, property services, project management, and sustainability, efficiency, and resiliency (SE&R). These services support new construction, renovation, and like-in-kind and upgrade maintenance repairs to the agency’s physical plant while ensuring compliance with the NCDOA State Construction Office. Through valuable rehabilitation and training for offenders, we aim to improve recidivism rates. DECM-Construction undertakes construction, renovation, and major maintenance projects that involve longer periods of resource allocation with a focus on enhancing the department's infrastructure assets. DECM-Maintenance, which encompasses the Mountain Regional Yard, Piedmont Regional Yard, Coastal Regional Yard, and three Satellite Yards, provides essential plumbing, HVAC/R, and electrical preventative, prescriptive, and routine maintenance services to all Institutions and Facilities. Additionally, our maintenance efforts include specific areas such as telecommunications, electronic intrusion systems (EIS), fencing, cameras, fire alarms, and energy management systems, all focused on maintaining the Department’s infrastructure assets.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain an NC Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with supervisor and coworkers and understand verbal and written instructions and communications regarding work assignments.
  • Working knowledge of Building Design and Systems.
  • Documented knowledge of new construction and/or building renovation practices.
  • Ability to Read, Comprehend and Understand Blueprints, Drawings and Schematics.
  • Experience with the methods, practices, tools and machinery and construction equipment used in building renovation and construction.
  • Ability to Estimate Building materials in all aspects of Construction and Renovations.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance and repair of building electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance and repair of plumbing systems.
  • Working knowledge of the maintenance and repair of general HVAC systems.
  • Proven computer skills sufficient for e-mail, work order processing, time entries, performance evaluations, and/or product research, etc.
