About The Position

The Vehicle Maintenance Manager oversees all day-to-day operations of a designated maintenance shop or location. This role ensures the efficient performance of preventive maintenance, running repairs, and other maintenance activities necessary to keep the transit fleet operational and safe. The Vehicle Maintenance Manager supervises Maintenance Shop Supervisors, maintaining compliance with safety regulations, CATS’ / TMOC policies, and operational goals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in automotive technology, diesel mechanics, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in transit or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, air brakes, and HVAC systems in transit vehicles.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including supervising teams and coordinating activities.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Utilize maintenance management software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Direct daily shop activities, ensuring timely and efficient maintenance and repair of the transit fleet.
  • Plan and schedule work assignments, balancing operational needs and staff availability.
  • Monitor fleet readiness to meet service requirements, including peak vehicle pullout.
  • Maintain shop safety, cleanliness, and adherence to workplace standards.
  • Supervise Maintenance Shop Supervisors and provide guidance on workflow and priorities.
  • Assist in evaluating shop personnel.
  • Support staff in developing technical skills and knowledge to improve overall shop performance.
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration among staff to achieve maintenance goals.
  • Ensure that all preventive maintenance and repair activities align with CATS / TMOC standards and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Conduct inspections of completed work to verify quality and compliance with safety standards.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance Supervisors, Trainers and Technicians to address complex repair challenges.
  • Identify recurring maintenance issues and collaborate with the Director of Maintenance and Assistant Director of Maintenance to develop solutions.
  • Ensure adherence to safety regulations, environmental standards, and CATS / TMOC policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, staff assignments, and fleet status.
  • Prepare reports on shop performance, staffing, and fleet readiness for management review.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and compliance activities as required.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for shop operations, communicating updates and needs to the Assistant Director of Vehicle Maintenance.
  • Coordinate with other departments, including Fleet Support Services, to ensure effective maintenance planning and execution.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including breakdowns and service disruptions, providing guidance and support to staff.
