About The Position

Bethel School District is seeking qualified applicants for an 8 hour per day Maintenance I position. This position works 12 months. Nature of Work A Maintenance I may be assigned a variety of manual tasks ranging from the maintenance and repair of School District facilities, grounds, irrigation systems, walkways, parking areas, and equipment used in maintenance work, or relating to the warehousing and delivery of supplies. Positions of this class may also assist positions in higher level trades/maintenance classes on electrical, plumbing, carpentry, heating and cooling, mechanical repair, and other activities performed under the guidance of a skilled trades person. The nature of assignments will vary depending on the season of the year and involves substantial outside work in a variety of weather conditions. Work involves the safe handling of chemicals and operation of pick-up and delivery trucks, tractor mounted equipment, lawn mowers, and other manual or power tools used in the work.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the safe operation of hand and power tools, and chemical applicators used in the maintenance of buildings, equipment, and grounds, as required by the position.
  • Ability to safely operate tools and equipment as required by the position.
  • Ability to learn and apply safe and proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply oral and written instructions and directions.
  • Ability to learn the operation of tractor mounted equipment such as a backhoe or loader.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to handle and work around chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, as required by the position.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a crew.
  • Ability to relate to people in a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Possession or ability to obtain a valid Oregon Driver's license at the time of employment.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality regarding students, staff, and other individuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, students, administrators, parents, and co-workers.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable and prompt attendance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid Oregon Driver's License
  • FBI fingerprint and background check
  • Upon offer of employment applicants must obtain a fingerprint clearance from the Oregon Department of Education through a process authorized by the Bethel School District. Applicants would be responsible for the one-time fingerprint clearance fee.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to read and understand basic construction and irrigation system blueprints is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Mows lawns and athletic fields using riding or hand mowers; cleans and lubricates equipment.
  • Cares for shrubs and grounds by fertilizing, seriating, pruning, planting, and removing dead or damaged lawns; properly and safely mixes and applies insecticides, herbicides, or fungicides, using hand or machine applicators.
  • Lays out and marks athletic fields; maintains and repairs playground equipment; builds and installs fences; mixes and pours concrete to repair or install new walkways; and repairs holes in parking lots.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains PVC irrigation systems; programs controllers for proper irrigation; removes controllers for shipment to repair facility.
  • Assists other trades/maintenance workers as part of a crew on a variety of skilled and semi-skilled projects.
  • Serves as a warehouse worker responsible for picking up, unloading, checking, storing, and distributing perishable and nonperishable food supplies, materials, and equipment to District schools and other facilities.
