About The Position

King and Queen County is seeking a full-time Maintenance and Grounds Technician. This position supports the Director of Maintenance and Grounds with the maintenance, safety, functionality and appearance of all building and grounds owned and/or operated by the County. ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Grounds, the technician assists with the maintenance, safety, functionality and appearance of all buildings and grounds owned and/or operated by the County. This position supports the Director to ensure that all aspects of a building's infrastructure and grounds are well-maintained and meet industry standards. This position is also responsible for performing and/or facilitating maintenance on County fleet vehicles. The technician performs a variety of skilled and non-skilled work in the physical structures and buildings owned by the County and the preparation and maintenance of grounds and parking lots throughout the year. GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Supports the Director in coordinating the maintenance and repair of County buildings and grounds as well as construction, renovation, and maintenance work done by contractors for the County. Performs maintenance work within the scope of the employee’s skill set as long as the task does not require a special license or current certification that the employee does not hold. Work will be performed both indoors and outdoors as needed during all seasons of the year. Must be able to traverse property and facility to diagnose building issues and plan repairs or maintenance. Must be physically able to perform repairs when needed. Must be able to lift 25 pounds on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Must be able to perform outdoor duties throughout all seasons of the year. Physical stamina to handle a full shift of being active and working on the building and grounds. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate county vehicles. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS: Assists with the evaluation of systems or facilities to determine maintenance or repairs that need to be performed. Completes maintenance and repair work as assigned by the Director in a timely manner. Interpersonal skills to interact with other employees, vendors, and citizens of the County in a professional and pleasant manner. Attention to detail to ensure that all jobs are completed in an exemplary manner and any potential hazards or warning signs of problems are not overlooked. Landscape maintenance to include mowing, weed-eating, edging, pruning, trimming, blowing and all other related duties as assigned by the Director. Snow and ice removal to include shoveling, scraping and placing of salt at all County facilities. Maintenance projects as assigned including, but not limited to, changing of lightbulbs, painting, assembly of furniture and/or equipment for county departments. Assist with plumbing, electrical and mechanical projects under the supervision and direction of the Director. Disposal of items at county convenience centers that will not fit in or would overfill dumpsters and county facilities. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Adequate plumbing, electrical, and carpentry ability to handle basic repairs around the buildings.
  • Basic knowledge of maintaining grounds and parking lots.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate county vehicles.
  • Moderate knowledge of building systems such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC
  • Ability to diagnose basic maintenance issues and determine what repairs are needed.
  • Some knowledge and experience with maintaining grounds and parking lots in all seasons of the year.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact with other employees, vendors, and citizens of the County in a professional and pleasant manner.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of experience working in a similar position is preferred but not required.
