About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! This position reports to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor and provides facility maintenance support to a multi-level custody male correctional facility. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: About Central Prison: Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers. While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanics, Construction); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented working knowledge of commercial/industrial maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Performing preventive and routine corrective maintenance tasks ensuring that assigned systems, equipment, and facilities are maintained in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Requiring to have multiple trade skills to allow the individual to deal with the variety of maintenance tasks that will have to be dealt with on a routine basis at a correctional facility.
  • Performing at the semi-skilled level for various maintenance trades as required.
  • Supervising skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled labor. (including offenders) to assist in completing assigned tasks.
