About The Position

This is a readvertisement. All previous applicants MUST reapply to be considered. The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) houses the regulatory laboratories for the Department of Agriculture. The labs consist of the Food & Drug Protection Division Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pesticide Residue labs; the Veterinary Division Animal Disease Diagnostic lab; the Standards Division Weights and Measures lab, and the Standards Division Fuel Quality testing lab. These laboratories form the scientific basis for all regulatory work performed by the Department ensuring consumer protection for human and animal food, commerce, and animal health. The Facility Maintenance section is responsible for all buildings and maintenance for the state-of-the art ASC facility and three veterinary laboratories throughout the state. The Maintenance Construction Technician III is hands-on with maintenance and repairs of the general physical building and mechanical/electrical/plumbing equipment and may occasionally assist with the surrounding grounds. Responsibilities include monitoring and working on all operating systems such as chillers, boilers, HVAC, and incinerators, as well as diagnosing and repairing plumbing and electrical issues. Requirements

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general building maintenance and/or the repair of equipment including boilers, chillers, and/or HVAC systems.
  • Ability to use tools required for at least two of the following moderately complex trades: HVAC, plumbing, and/or electrical.
  • Ability to arrive at the ASC facility within 60 minutes
  • Ability to operate common types of machine shop or woodworking power equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days, a valid NC driver's license.
  • May be required to obtain, within the first 1 year of employment, a pesticides applicator's license.
